The Reputation

Alfred’s Kitchen is a late night burger institution of Perth located on the corner of Meadow and James Streets in Guildford. It was opened way back in 1946 by one Alfred Cook making it Western Australia’s longest running Burger bar. Many many people in Perth have visited and eaten at Alfred’s, sometimes regularly over the 70 years it has been trading. Masterchef judge and food critic Matt Preston labelled Alfred’s “The Best Burger In Australia”.

The Staff

The staff serve up a no bullshit approach to service. Friendly, fast, efficient and quintessential Australian, you can see the lady with rings on every finger to staff donning bunny ears during Easter. When I snooped around asking about the pending opening of their brand new dine in train cabin, the staff said “yeah what about it!” It’s that sort of straight up, Aussie shooting from the hip etiquette that makes many fall in love with the authenticity of the place.

The Menu

Their pea and ham soup at $4.50 for a small and $6.50 for a large, this is a thick and hearty soup that is a meal in itself. The ‘Cram’, ‘Alfred’s Special’ and The ‘Steak Burger’ are amongst Alfred’s most famous menu items. The ‘Cram’ offers steak, a hamburger, egg, cheese and bacon on a bun. Hungry? Go for chips as well however good luck finishing them in combo.

Hamburgers, Baconburgers and Steakburgers are the staples here and each can be ordered in combinations of between six and nine ascending in additional toppings. The taste, oh the taste of an Alfred’s Burger. If you have eaten there, you will know. If not, you will know someone who has.

People Watching

Men in tuxedo’s, women in ball dresses, guys in double pluggers and Bintang singlets, pensioners in tracksuit pants, everyone is welcome at Alfred’s. The fireplace serves as a communal hub for all to gather around and it is hard not to notice the massive diversity in people that love eating at Alfred’s. Cannot think of anywhere else in Western Australia that so many different classes, ages, types of people gather around eating – for the love of the burgers!

Open late

Well before Maccas opened 24/7 in Perth, Alfred’s was (and still is) one of the only late night (past 12am Friday/Saturday) places anywhere in Perth that does a quality late night burger and has a cult following with party animals and clubbers alike. We all know how good a burger can taste after a few too many, imagine an Alfred’s burger at 2am!

Trading so late is a novelty in itself, less so nowadays, however many still travel out to Guildford for that quality burger hit late night.

Alfreds Kitchen Opening Hours

Monday-Thursday: 5pm to midnight
Friday: 5pm to 2am
Saturday: 12pm to 2am
Sunday: 12pm to midnight

The Fireplace

Since men and women were hunters and gatherers and ate in a cave – a flame has always be a spectacle when congregating to eat food. The fireplace melts down social barriers as people often kick a log or throw their food paper wrapper on the fire to see it spark up illuminating collective “wows!” from young to old alike. Alfred’s says they are the only flame to burn in Guildford, daily, and the fire burns every day of the year. The fire burning represents they are open for trade. Maccas raises it flag when open for trade, Alfred’s lights a fire, I know which one gets my vote.

Alfred’s Kitchen also recently opened their first dining area in a historic 1906 train carriage. That way you don’t have to just grab your burgers and go, you can relax in the vintage train cart or in their alfresco area.
