The Perth Zoo has a new addition to the family.

Motorists this morning would have received a bit of a surprise on the road as Kitoto a 6 year olf giraffe made her way to the Perth Zoo.

After a long 4,200km journey across the Nullarbor, Kitoto arrived at Perth Zoo this morning no doubt eager to explore her new home.

The reason for Kitoto’s transfer from Taronga Zoo Sydney to Perth is part of the zoo’s breeding program and to ensure genetic diversity.

Kitoto will be introduced to a 14-year-old male Giraffe named Armani. A proven breeding bull, Armani has already sired three calves and keepers are hoping to hear the pitter-patter of giraffe calf hooves again in the near future.

Since 1995 the Perth Zoo’s breeding program has successfully bred 7 giraffes.
