Rottnest Island redevelopment gets the tick of approval.

A significant accommodation upgrade has just been approved for Rottnest. Visitors to Rottnest Island will soon be able to take advantage of new accommodation options after boutique Western Australian developer Place Development Australia’s bid to repurpose and expand the existing Rottnest Lodge was approved this week.

Karma Resort, will undergo a $40 million transformation as part of Rottnest Island Authority’s vision for revitalising and broadening the Islands’ accommodation offers.

The project will be delivered by a consortium of best-in-class Western Australian architects, construction, hospitality and wellness operators led by Place Development Australia.

What this means for Karma Resort?

The existing site will be transformed into a 94-room resort offering a range of mixed accommodation types to suit a wide-range of travellers, a unique below-ground day spa, restaurant, sunset lounge bar, pool, artisan coffee and gelato shop and onsite staff accommodation.

Feedback from aboriginal consultants also assisted in shaping the heart of the site to be a dedicated cultural public space that will offer year-round activation.

Commenting on the appointment, Place Development Australia director Robert Bates-Smith, said the new low-impact, light-touch development would be a welcoming and inclusive West Australian resort that reflects the relaxed informality of Rottnest and pays respects to the Island’s Indigenous significance.

“We are thrilled to be adding this exciting and iconic development to our portfolio, and to be embarking on the project with such a strong consortium of local partners.” Mr Bates-Smith said.

“We are collaborating with a carefully curated team of WA’s most talented and experienced architects and operators – each individually proven to deliver destinations of a world-class standard – to ensure an authentic, localised and active accommodation, food and beverage, wellness and cultural precinct.

“Collectively, we share a desire to deepen Rottnest’s offer and appeal with this new, iconic hospitality and cultural tourism addition to the Rottnest fold. It’s one that we are confident all Western Australians will be proud of and which will attract visitors from interstate and abroad.”

When will the redevelopment be complete?

Construction is scheduled to commence 1 June 2022 and is anticipated for completion in 2025.
