The other kind of drink to have down south.
The drive down south may be tiresome at times, but there is one sure-fire hit to perk you up – the best coffee in the Margaret River region and beyond! Yes, that reverend bean can be the saviour you need to refuel the batteries for an epic day of sightseeing that may lay ahead in Australia’s South West.
Instead of grabbing a quick takeaway en route to your final destination, make stopping in Australia’s South West for a caffeinated cup an enjoyable experience in itself.
Here we list five unique coffee houses that are worth your holiday time when in Australia’s South West.
Bunbury’s café scene has stepped up a notch with the boutique coffee house The Townhouse, adding exciting flavours and flair along the central thoroughfare, Victoria Street.
The much-loved local coffee house serves up coffee from West Perth’s brewmasters, Mano a Mano Coffee Roasters. For a unique cuppa, try the house specialty brew, Bulletproof consisting of a double shot of espresso, MCT oil, cacao butter or grass-fed butter.
Its varied coffee flavours extend to its colourful, lip-smacking menu consisting of turmeric lattes, falafel bowls with beetroot hummus and juices galore. But colour isn’t limited to what’s on the table as its trendy backyard area is decked with brightly-hued murals by local artists.
Location: The Townhouse, 39 Victoria Street, Bunbury WA 6230
Southern Roasting Co
If Manjimup is the ‘food bowl of the south,’ then let Southern Roasting Co be the region’s cup of choice. What was once an old art deco laundry is now the region’s go-to coffee roasting house with Manjimup’s brewing heroes dedicated to crafting the perfect coffee onsite. The remnants of their hard work pay off, with producing heavenly aromas around the cafe and into their backyard paddock.
Its craftsmanship extends to its menu, featuring freshly baked breads and pastries, gourmet food bowls and uniquely delightful bourbon and maple syrup salmon from local wood smoke artisans, Holy Smokes’.
Its breezy atmosphere makes this the type of place to kick back with good company (or a good book) and unwind for a few hours while sipping on the finer beans in life.
Location: Southern Roasting Co, 94-96 Giblett St, Manjimup WA 6258
Lady Marmalade may look pretty on the outside; however, this homely cafe may be the devil in disguise when it comes to giving in to your deepest, darkest sugary pleasures – deserts.
Kirup’s home-style cafe is a perfect pitstop along the Great Western Highway. Sit outside or sit inside its cutesy, cottage-feel cafe and enjoy a cup of the roasted bean from Grouch & Co while you slowly dig your fork into its famed lemon meringue cake, almost selling out daily or another baked treat presented along its ever-tempting cake counter. (Yes, take an extra raspberry and coconut brownie for the road!)
Location: Lady Marmalade, 51 South Western Highway, Kirup WA 6251
Holy Smoke Gourmet Café
How thankful we are that this little, smokey gourmet cafe exists. Situated in what appears to be Pemberton’s best kept secret garden, Holy Smoke Gourmet Café is a treat to the senses.
Holy Smoke Gourmet Café brings the world of tasteful smoking and roasting in unison.
Have a cup of the reverend bean from local roasters, Yahava, while soaking up the beauty of its enchanting el fresco dining area along the green. Something else not to be missed off its menu is its selection of traditionally smoked delicacies, ranging from Portuguese chicken, rainbow trout and bourbon, maple syrup salmon and honey-cured bacon. Your mouth is watering at the thought of this smoke house, right?
It is easy to lose track of time here as the front yard it’s almost too relaxing for you not to let the coffee and food digest that extra bit longer in harmonious surrounds.
Holy Smoke Gourmet Café, 6 Dickinson St, Pemberton WA 6260
Back Beach Café
A perfect brew with a perfect view. Bunbury’s local favourite Back Beach Café and Restaurant may be the city’s most underrated dining haunt, far from the centre and overlooking Back Beach.
You may come here for its coastal views, but its menu and drink offerings are just as sweet – if not more so. This breezy, laidback cafe supports local producers with its coffee roasted in Yallingup and its produce coming from across the south-west region. Owners Miranda and Clayton Hirsch are not only passionate about what they serve up but delivering top-notch service too, with engaging in good chat (and banter!) when this beachside food mecca is not heaving with hungry folk.
Come weekends; the place is brimming with brunch lovers so get in before beaching yourself along the coast after a tantalising feed!
Location: Back Beach Café & Restaurant, Lot 757 Ocean Dr, Bunbury WA 6230
