ABC News Reader James McHale in hilarious social media stoush with Nine News Perth

If the film Anchorman with Ron Burgundy was set in Perth……

ABC News Perth presenter James McHale and members of the Nine News Perth team are pilling it on each other on social media.

The Twitter war began after McHale shared an image of his giant mug online, part of a Murdoch University ad campaign.

As you can see, the ad featuring McHale sits directly atop the Channel Nine Perth CBD station, aimed at passing Mitchell freeway drivers.

McHale, who is also hosting a live talk show at the Fringe World Festival this year, is known well by his colleagues in the news business for his cheeky on and off-air behaviour.

“Cute. @9NewsPerth beneath me,” McHale wrote.

“QUIVER AS YOU BOW DOWN BEFORE THE GLORIOUS FURY OF YOUR DIGITAL OVERLORD, PEASANTS. Hope the move went well x”

Here’s the tweet:

The rival Perth newsers have been in a Twitter spat in the hours since, taking on each other in a war of local news egos.

Nine News Perth presenter Tim McMillan (who’s substituting on the Today Show for Karl Stefanovic in Sydney over Summer) thanked McHale for helping the station pay it’s bills.

Nine News Perth State Political reporter Josh Jerga took this jab:

“Damn it! Those vandals are at it again! Drawing giant penises on billboards,” he wrote.

McHale, who is a trained lawyer and former Murdoch University student, is the face of a billboard campaign across Perth for the University.

James McHale also hosts a 5pm national news bulletin on ABC News TV.
