Have we all pushed last week’s game out of our minds…?

The West Coast Eagles come into the Sir Doug Nicholls indigenous round off a very poor 61-point loss to the Bombers at Etihad last week, their worst loss of the season. Eagles Coach Adam Simpson has swung the axe ahead of this week’s clash with the GWS Giants on Sunday at Domain Stadium.

West Coast’s game appeared to be over not long after it had begun last week, they never really looked a chance to get on top of the Bombers. There have been many changes to the line-up this week with Jack Redden, Fraser McInnes, Kurt Mutimer and Tom Barrass all being omitted and Sharrod Wellingham left out with an ankle injury. Will Schofield, Josh Hill, Drew Petrie, Eric Mackenzie, Lewis Jetta, Jackson Nelson, Mark Hutchings and Malcolm Karpany have all been included back into the squad to face GWS, Drew Petrie expected to play just his second game for West Coast after breaking his hand in round one.

The West Coast Eagles struggled to find an answer for Bomber Joe Daniher last week, who was damaging in the forward line and finished up kicking five goals straight. Orazio Fantasia managed three goals, while Cale Hooker, Josh Green and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti finished with two goals each. Zach Merrett continued his impressive form and finished with 37 disposals.

One minor positive to come out of last week’s thumping is that Josh Kennedy seemed to sharpen up his goal kicking from previous weeks, managing to finish the game with four goals. Jack Darling had issues with accuracy in front of goal, ending the game with two goals and five behinds. Mark LeCras was uncharacteristically average, recording just three behinds and 14 disposals.

So basically, if everyone got their butts kicked into gear during the week, which I think they would have, the Eagles should be a lot more successful on Sunday! Plus – the game is at home, we all know that the home ground advantage will provide a huge boost for West Coast, hopefully enough to get them over the line.

The Giants head west after a 3-point win over Richmond at Spotless Stadium last week, pipping the Tigers at the post after trailing by 25 points going into the final quarter. The Tigers were inaccurate in the final quarter and the Giants stepped it up a notch and capitalised on their scoring opportunities. GWS have also had to make a few changes to their line-up this week to accommodate the loss of Rory Lobb with an ankle injury and Stevie Johnson with a knee injury. Isaac Cumming, Dawson Simpson, Tim Mohr, Harrison Himmelberg and Matthew Kennedy have been included into the squad.

West Coast have never lost to the Giants, with the Eagles winning four of their last five contests against GSW by more than 80 points. I think this will be a MUCH closer game, I am tipping the West Coast Eagles to beat the Giants by 9 points!
