Hmmm. Well Round 1 didn’t really go to plan for the Fremantle Dockers…

The Fremantle Dockers hosted the Geelong Cats on Sunday at Domain Stadium and copped a 42-point hiding to start off their season. *Sigh* As a Freo supporter, this was not the way I was hoping the Dockers would commence their 2017 season. So, what went wrong?

New recruit Cam McCarthy impressed in the JLT Series yet struggled to make any sort of impact against the Cats. He showed a glimmer of hope in the final quarter but it was too little too late. Fellow recruits Shane Kersten and Brad Hill also looked promising in the lead up to round one yet had no influence on the game when it mattered. The Dockers need them to find their form, especially McCarthy and Kersten, who should be forming the pillars of Freo’s forward line.

Fremantle Dockers struggled to hold on to any possessions they acquired, seven of Geelong’s 11 first half goals resulted from Freo turnovers. The lack of skill level and good decision-making coming from Fremantle was worrying. They finished with more inside fifties than Geelong and won the clearance count 48-34, yet still lost by seven goals.

The much-hyped match-up between Nat Fyfe and Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield turned out to be a bit of a let down. Dangerfield finished with 24 touches and three goals and Fyfe finished with 28 touches and one goal, yet they rarely crossed paths on field. Except for this little nudge of course… A personal highlight of mine from the game!

Fyfe, David Mundy and Stephen Hill were very good for the Dockers at times during the game, and Aaron Sandilands dominated the ruck, which I suppose are some positives. However, the inconsistencies and inaccuracies of the rest of the team allowed Geelong to cash in on every error that was made, constantly punishing Freo on the scoreboard.

Fremantle will now travel to Adelaide Oval to take on Port Adelaide on Sunday 2 April, bounce-down at 2.40pm WST.

I tipped with my heart last week and backed Freo to beat the Cats (don’t judge me!) but I won’t be making the same mistake this week. I am tipping Port Adelaide to beat the Fremantle Dockers by 20 points.
