Who will remain undefeated this season after round three?

West Coast Eagles come in to round three after snatching victory from the Saints at Domain Stadium last weekend, to record their second win of the season. St Kilda was in the driver’s seat for 90% of the match, yet their inaccuracy in front of goal allowed West Coast to take the lead in the final quarter and secure the win.

This week, the Eagles travel to the MCG to take on the Richmond Tigers on Saturday; both teams are undefeated after the first two rounds. I don’t think the Eagles would be entirely happy with their performance last week (I was at the game and a lot of their supporters were not happy…), despite getting the four points, so I think Richmond will probably come in to the game with a little bit more confidence.

Keep an eye out for:

Dustin Martin

He has been a huge part of the Tigers recent success, and no doubt already earned himself a Brownlow vote or two. He currently has a fractured cheekbone however, I believe he will still play, and possibly wear a helmet. West Coast Eagles will need to have a plan to limit Martin’s ball use because once he gets it, there’s no getting it off him again!

Josh Kennedy v Alex Rance Match-Up

What a juicy match-up this will be! Kennedy struggled to make an impact for West Coast in the first half last week, finishing with just one kick at the long break. St Kilda’s Nathan Brown did an excellent job keeping Kennedy out of the game, well, for about 90% of it. All-Australian full-back Alex Rance will get the JK job this week and I have a feeling Rance will stick on Kennedy like a leach, for the full four quarters. Kennedy will need to find a way to get his hands and boot on the ball, West Coast will need him to have a big day out in front of goal to stay competitive on Saturday. I think the game result will very much reflect which of these two lads turns up better on the day!

Jonathan Giles

West Coast’s current ruckman Giles will be determined to show everyone why he deserves a place in the squad, and will be playing his little heart out while he has the opportunity. The ruck stock has been hit hard at West Coast with Nic Naitanui (knee), Scott Lycett (shoulder) and Drew Petrie (hand) all currently watching on from the sidelines, which now gives Giles his time to shine. And Giles has spark out there! Check out his incredible snap goal from last week:

This is going to be one heck of a game! I will stick with the WA team and tip West Coast Eagles to beat Richmond by 10 points.
