Olé, Olé, Olé! Who doesn’t love Mexican food (surely it tops most people’s choice as number one)? And lucky for us, we have some amazing places to choose from when chasing the best Mexican in Perth.

Whether you’re after the authentic offerings, the fusion or the cheesy interpretation, we’ve found the best to choose from. Word of warning though: you may need a siesta or two after all this dining.

el Publico

After opening in Highgate in 2012, el Publico has easily climbed to the top of many Mexican loving diners’ lists. And it’s with good reason.

The food is modern yet maintains it’s Mexican roots, with some standout items like the beef mogo mogo balls which have a banana batter and come with chipotle crema. They’re ridiculously addictive, as are the tacos such as the pork belly and the battered cauliflower.

For those who live for meat, the mixed grill is a great choice, with beef brisket, chorizo, battered chicken, pork belly, seasonal veggies, beans, rice and tortillas – all for a very reasonable $45 price tag.

Or get their $60 feed me menu which will have you staggering out the door holding your belly in absolute protest at all the food you’ve just devoured.

La Cabana Bar & Taqueria

The opening of La Cabana Bar & Taqueria in South Fremantle brought a wave of joy throughout locals and visitors to the area.

From the same team behind the wildly popular food truck Eat No Evil, here you’ll find a laid back Freo vibe with punchy Mexican tastes that hero the local produce utilised. The ceviche is swoonworthy (and comes on a nice crisp tostada); the corn tentacles fun and vibrant; and the charred prawns finger-licking good.

Yes, the booze is also rocking, but they have some great non alcoholic options like tamarind soda, or chia and cucumber water. It’s fun, and you’ll find yourself coming back time and time again.

Oh and did we mention it’s dog friendly?

La Cholita

If you haven’t tried La Cholita in Northbridge’s chips and guacamole, have you even lived?

Part of the same group with the likes of Alabama Song, Henry Summer, Sneaky Tony’s and more, it’s easy to see why La Cholita has been a triumph of success since opening. The menu goes beyond the standard Mexican offering and drives home freshness and flavour in one.

The chorizo quesadillas are a longstanding favourite, as are the tacos and tostadas. And in our opinion, all dishes are perfectly enhanced with a mezcal or two.

El Grotto

Seaside views, spicy margaritas and Mexican food that will leave you wanting more after each bite? We must be talking about Scarborough’s El Grotto.

Sure, it’s a banging bar in it’s own right, but don’t neglect to try their food – it’s really quite great. Fried chicken tostadas, baja fish burritos, chorizo nachos, barbacoa lamb taco.

The hardest thing really is choosing what to eat and drink. But once you do, salud your dining companions and enjoy that beautiful sea breeze.

Piggy Food Co

It’s a Californian vibe to Fremantle’s Piggy Food Co, but it has a distinctly Mexican air to it too which is why we had to include it on our list.

And with $5 tacos Friday to Sunday 12-5pm, there’s even more reason to love it here. The menu features favourites like hand pressed corn tortilla tacos, spicy hot wings and Hog Fries – all hand crafted in house and made to order so it’s fresh, tasty and addictive.

Save room for their famed ice-cream sandwiches which are made from double choc-chip cookies and a variety of different ice-cream flavours.

Donnie Taco

It’s a surprising combination of coffee, tacos and basketball; and yet Donnie Taco makes it work with aplomb.

The menu has a simple offering of tacos, toasted sandwiches and the people pleaser dish of nachos too. From the likes of smoked beef with baja sauce and morita salsa, to marinated jackfruit with jalapeno mayonnaise, the tacos are definitely the star of their offering and can be picked up for a very reasonable $7 each or three for $18.

Find them in West Perth.

Al Pastor Taqueria and Tequila Bar

Did someone say endless tacos?

Ohhhh boy Al Pastor Taqueria and Tequila Bar in Fremantle’s Sunshine Harvester have really made it impossible not to pay them a visit. Held on Thursdays, it’s $40 a head and you get 2 margaritas or beers while you taco until you have to say no go.

But if that’s not up your alley then head down for a much less frenzied eating adventure there one night with cocktails and tasty dishes like their choriqueso (chorizon and cheese dip with tortillas), Aztec salad or loaded fries.

Caballitos

Margaritas, tequila masterclasses, pinata menus.

There’s no denying that Perth CBD’s Caballitos is jam-packed with fun times. The name means the little horse, so pony up when you pay this late-night bar a visit and really embrace all the Mexican vibes it has to offer.

Sure there’s not a huge variety in the food menu since it’s more bar than restaurant, but that doesn’t stop flavour bomb after flavour bomb when you try their soft tacos such as frijoles (smoky black beans), beef carnitas, pork and chicken.

Mexican Kitchen

Fremantle’s Mexican Kitchen is a family owned venue that’s been a resident of the Port City’s café strip since 1980, making it one of the longer standing restaurants serving up food of this kind here.

It has a distinctly Tex-Mex feel to it, and the food is all kinds of decadent such as the chilli con queso (hello cheese dip), fried taquitos and flautas, and of course many other flavours. It’s designed for big groups and families, with a great deal of diverse menu items and drinks to choose from.
