The City of Fremantle to paint the town Purple, literally – announce 2015 Festivities to Celebrate Freo Dockers in Finals 2015

With top spot safely secured for the Fremantle Football Club and finals less than a week away, plans are underway to once again convert the port city of Fremantle into a sea of purple.

The City of Fremantle is in the process of installing 40 huge ‘Go Freo’ banners and this week, as is now tradition, the spiritual centre of Fremantle, the South Terrace ‘Cappuccino Strip’, will be pained purple.

Fremantle Mayor and avid Fremantle Dockers supporter Brad Pettitt said the level of anticipation was growing for another tilt by Freo at an elusive AFL Premiership.

“It’s been a fairly low-key build up so far but I expect another dose of ‘purple fever’ is about to infect the port city as the AFL finals start this week. I’m sure we’ll all catch a dose of it as we did in 2013,” said mayor Pettitt.

If the Dockers were to make the AFL Grand Final on 3 October, the City will again be hosting an all-ages, family-friendly street festival with two giant screens to be erected along South Terrace; and one at the Fremantle Esplanade with face painting and other kids’ activities.

“The City of Fremantle is going all out making sure the city is dressed in as much purple as possible and if the Dockers make it all the way, we’ll close South Terrace to traffic and host the country’s biggest and best AFL Grand Final street festival. If all goes to plan, Freo will be second only to the MCG as the place to be on the first Saturday in October,” mayor Pettitt said.

Among other things happening around the city, heritage buildings will be uplit in purple LED lighting and businesses are being encouraged to dress up their shops in purple to support the local team.

The City has also offered the Fremantle Football Club a street parade if the dream turns into reality and Fremantle wins the flag.
‘Daisy’ (inset above), a four-year Shih Tzu and resident of East Fremantle, has already got into the spirit, donning purple and visiting various locations in Fremantle. She is already being referred to as ‘Daisy Docker’ and has promised to return to Fremantle over the finals series to again pose for photos and support her team.
