Things to do while you’re in Melbourne

Renowned for being crowned the “World’s Most Liveable City” for seven years in a row, Melbourne is famous for its food, art, culture, and sports scene. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, if you’re looking for ways to while away the hours in Melbourne, we’ve rounded up some of the best things to do.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria

Located smack bang in the middle of the city, Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens are an absolute must. Spanning across a cool 38 hectares, the expansive garden is home to 8,500 plant species, tranquil lakes, and lush lawns. You could even pack a picnic to devour under the trees, if you’re that way inclined!

Founded in 1861 and fondly known as the NGV, the National Gallery of Victoria is Australia’s oldest and most visited art museum. The cultural institution hosts a treasure trove of more than 76,000 works that traverse thousands of years and a wealth of ideas, disciplines, and styles. Expect a wide range of international and local artists, exhibitions, programs, and events, from contemporary art to history, fashion, design, architecture, sound, and dance.

Queen Victoria Market

Known as “Queen Vic”, the Queen Victoria Market has been the heart of Melbourne for more than 140 years. Cemented on the National Heritage List, the historic inner-city market is characterised by more than 600 small businesses. Here, you can find anything from Australian fruit and vegetables to local and imported gourmet food, clothing, and souvenirs.

Explore the city’s laneways

Melbourne is a city famous for its laneways and arcades oozing with character. Our two cents is that Degraves Street is perhaps one of the best. Why? It distils everything that’s loved about Melbourne into one quaint street. The Parisian-looking lane connects Flinders Lane and Flinders Street and is littered with a bunch of cafés with on-street dining.

Shrine of Remembrance

The Shrine of Remembrance is Victoria’s national memorial honouring the service and sacrifice of Australians in war and peacekeeping. Here, you can reflect, discover the real-life stories of wartime, and view magnificent vistas of the memorial gardens and Melbourne.
