Perth will now be part of the race to find a coronavirus vaccine.

It’s fair to say that the world has come to a standstill since the coronavirus pandemic has gone global and the only way we can move towards normality is with a coronavirus vaccine.

To date, there have been over 3,000,000 confirmed cases worldwide and over 211,000 deaths. While some countries have worked hard to contain the pandemic, others are just beginning to feel the devastating effect of COVID-19 both on the health and economic sides.

Without a cure – countries around the world will have to continue to restrict peoples movements and interactions to minimise the spread and impact of the pandemic.

In the quest for a coronavirus vaccine, a Perth clinical research company has been selected to undertake a trial of one of the first vaccines in the world to demonstrate safety and immune response against COVID-19.

Linear Clinical Research today announced that it will conduct a human trial of a ground-breaking vaccine candidate.

Linear’s Chief Executive Officer Jayden Rogers said securing the vaccine trial was a major coup for WA and Australia.

“WA is in the unique position of working towards successfully suppressing the disease, so medical experts can dedicate resources to prevention,” said Mr. Rogers.

“We are fortunate to be one of the few countries in the world to still be offering functional clinical trial facilities because we do not have large volumes of COVID-19 cases as compared to other parts of the world,” he said.

The Phase 1 clinical trial of the COVID-19 S-Trimer vaccine is planned to involve healthy adult and healthy elderly trial participants. Linear will be seeking volunteers to participate in the study within the next 2 months.

If successful, a larger clinical trial involving 1’000s of people around the world would be conducted immediately, and it is hoped that the COVID-19 vaccine will be widely available upon confirmation of its safety and efficacy.

Without a vaccine, it is hard to envision a world where Australia will be able to open its borders again to the rest of the world – especially highly infected regions with the fear of a second wave starting up in Australia.

As WA Health Minister Roger Cook stated: “only once we get a vaccine will we have an exit strategy.”
