A domestic trial for a COVID vaccine failed after side effects were discovered.

A trial by University of Queensland scientists found the vaccine they were working on generated antibodies that triggered false-positive HIV tests.

The vaccine, which would have been distributed by pharmaceutical giant CSL, has been ditched as a result.

UQ’s vaccine trial head Dr Paul Young said the team was “devastated”.

“The last 11 months we’ve been living and breathing this particular project,” he said in statement.

The Federal Government was going to buy 51 million doses of the UQ vaccine by mid-next year.

Australia still has three vaccine deals with Oxford University, Pfizer and Novavax.

The Pfizer vaccine has already been rolled out in Britain last week for emergency use.
