Appreciation post!! This one goes out to five-time NBL Best Defensive Player and Perth Wildcats legend Damian Martin!

As the Wildcats focus on commencing their 30th consecutive finals campaign, kicking off on Friday night against the Illawarra Hawks, I thought we could show some extra love to one Cat in particular- skipper Damian Martin. Friday night’s game will be the 200th for Damo in the Perth Wildcats uniform.

Damian joined the Perth Wildcats for the 2009/2010 NBL season, and boy are we glad that he did!

Martin is a DEFENCE MACHINE has been named the NBL Best Defensive Player five years in a row, between 2011 and 2015, and could very well have won it again this year if he didn’t miss games due to injury. The main injury I’m referring to (of course) was his unforgettable/brutal jaw break resulting from the dropped elbow of Townsville Croc Brian Conklin. See below:

(Warning! Contents of video may have you yelling “DELIBERATE!” at the screen…)

As mentioned above, Damo kills it in defence. Ok, let’s be honest, he basically just kills it all around the court. Check out his dunk below! Followed by his excellent steal resulting in another dunk from team mate Shawn Redhage… Damo can do no wrong!

This is great. Let’s just keep watching Damian Martin highlights!

Here’s another- some excellent steals from the 2014/15 season.

After Friday night’s game, Damo will become the 10th player in Wildcats history to play 200 games for the club. In those 200 games he has won two Championships, been named in four All-NBL teams (2011 – 2014) and captained the Wildcats side for the last four seasons.

He plays the game at an intensity that not many other players can match. That’s why we love him.

Congrats Damo- I look forward to watching the next 200 games!
