Detached Perspective – Perth Artist Anya Brock returns to Fremantle

Known for her colourful and quirky paintings depicting beautiful women and various animals, Anya Brock has fast become on of Perth’s most famous home-grown artists.

This March, Anya has opened a new exhibition of work, taking her admirers back to her first love, abstract art.

“I’ve probably always wanted to be an abstract painter because that’s what I studied,” Brock told The West Australian.

“I loved all the work of the abstract artists in America in the 1950s and I have never really been attached to figuration. But I didn’t really feel like I was a full-enough human to be able to just draw on mark- making, so I created figurative work with a very abstract story behind it.

Brock is an artist in demand, with Australian fashion brand Mambo commissioning a beach fashion collaboration.

Anya’s colourful original paintings and prints feature in the interiors of Australia’s most contemporary homes and her larger-than-life murals can be found splashed across walls throughout Los Angeles, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Fremantle. Her budgie mural that adorned four 10-foot tall windows in Perth was featured in the New York Times.

Anya now splits her time between Fremantle and Darlinghurst studios as well as painting murals and teaching workshops nationally.

Anya Brock’s ‘Detached Perspective’ runs from March 12 to 26, with the gallery open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday from 10am-2pm.
