Red Rooster started life in Kelmscott in 1972 and has since become a brand most people in Perth are familiar with. Their current marketing ploy is to start a roast chicken war with the supermarkets, and the only winner there is us. Since July 1st, the chain has cut the price of its Whole Roast Chicken to $10.00 and is keeping that price for a while. That undercuts the two major Perth supermarkets by at least $2.00 a bird. But which one is best?

Red Rooster’s $10.00 chook is only available at that price on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. It’s roasted fresh daily, has good stuffing, and the chicken is nice and juicy. At $10.00, it’s a great option for an early-week dinner.
Coles and Woolworths both charge around $12.00 for a hot roast chicken. If you’re lucky, late afternoon/evening, you can often pick up one with a clearance sticker on it for anywhere between $4.00 and $10.00.
Taste is good. In our opinion, the Woolies roast chickens are better than the Coles ones, but there’s not a lot in it.
Consumer group Canstar Blue put the supermarket birds to a formal taste test this year, surveying 1,935 Australians in research finalised in February. IGA won overall, ending a five-year run by Costco and taking five stars for taste in the process.
Between the two main supermarkets, Canstar also had Woolworths coming out ahead of Coles.
Red Rooster wasn’t included in this survey as Canstar only rates supermarkets.
