The Aviary is bringing Canada to Perth
Wednesday July 1st is Canada day, and if you’re a Perth-based Canuck – or just like any excuse to celebrate – The Aviary at 140 William is presenting “Canada Day on the Rooftop” from 11am. On offer will be traditional Canadian food favourites including poutine, maple chicken wings, Bloody Caesars and a number of special Canadian Club drinks and cocktails.
You’ve probably seen poutine on TV, although it hasn’t really made the big time outside of Canada. Originating in rural Quebec in the 1950s, poutine is traditionally a dish of french fries covered in a light gravy and cheese curds – no, not cheese, cheese curds, which is a rubbery, squeaky substance that is technically the solid parts of soured milk. Yum. No wonder we decided to stop at the gravy in Australia – although I’m glad to see cheese fries, chilli fries and other variants finally hitting Perth menus.
Like most traditional dishes, poutine has been reinterpreted in many different ways and embellished with just about any topping you can think of. In Canada you can even get it from chains such as McDonald’s and Burger King.
If you’re wondering what a Bloody Caesar is, so was I – it’s a Canadian version of a Bloody Mary and contains vodka, Clamato (a blend of tomato juice and clam broth), hot sauce and worcestershire sauce, served with ice in a celery-salt rimmed glass. Personally I’m not sure about a clam-flavoured cocktail!
