Nestled in the neighbourly patch of land that sits between Northbridge and Highgate, the vacant block once home to the Harvison Gallery has undergone a retro-tinged makeover. Gold foiled pin-up girls and hand-painted signage promising “Cold Drinks, Warm Service, and Hot Bartenders” gracing the shop front windows, Bar Love, we’re intrigued.
The aesthetic
The garish façade gives passersby a hint as to what lies inside. Rich burgundy, bright tangerine, pale pink, and cream stripe the length of the venue, which leans into 70s maximalism and a kitsch, disco bar aesthetic. Think mirror ball panther statues, bric-a-brac galore, and velvet love seats.
The venue is the first from two of Perth’s most beloved bartenders, Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh, who became fast friends while slinging drinks at cocktail institution, Mechanics’ Institute. Combined, they have more than 25 years of experience, along with a slew of bartending awards. And while Pip’s list of career achievements is lengthy, becoming the co-founder of Mix Haus, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to empowering women in the industry is the peak.
The drinks
It’s safe to say that at Bar Love, cocktails are paramount. Expect a tight seasonal menu of creative cocktails and quality classics, including signature creations like Peaches and Cream Negronis and the Vamos Matrini — the lovechild of an Espresso Martini and the viral Mont Blanc layered coffee. Plus, Pip’s filthy iteration of the dirty martini.
You’ll also find a balanced mix of craft and classics with four taps pouring batched cocktails from Idle Hands Drinks Co and brews from Shelter in Busselton, as well as a concise wine list that prioritises good value over scarcity.
The food
In the spirit of neighbourly love, guests can enjoy a bite prepared by the capable kitchen next door at Peasants Paradice. Chef, owner, and all-around nice guy Dwight Alexander is bringing his signature Modern African spice blends to classic bar snacks like loaded fries, focaccia, dips, and seasonal sandwiches.
