With summer just beginning here in WA, Perthlings will be flocking to ice cream and gelato stores to keep cool these next few months.

Luckily for us, Perth has a great array of authentic gelaterias and ice cream shops known for their delicious handmade sweet treats.

We’ve handpicked some of the best ice cream and gelato shops in Perth that offer everything from the classics of vanilla and chocolate to something more out there like fried ice cream.

Mimmo’s Gourmet Gelato

Location: Unit 9/121 James St, Guildford

An array of flavours | Mimmo’s Gourmet Gelato

Mimmo’s Gourmet Gelato prepares its gelato and sorbet in small batches using only the finest natural ingredients and freshest fruits available.

Indulge yourself in Perth’s finest and tastiest gelato which has won awards from the Perth Royal Show in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Flavours include tiramisu, apple pit, hazelnut, raspberry cheesecake, salted caramel honeycomb, and bacio (chocolate and hazelnut), but our personal favourite is the lemon sorbet which pairs perfect with summer heat.

Hanabing

Location: Northbridge

Visit Perth’s first-ever Korean dessert cafe, Hanabing, and try their premium soft gelato, bubble tea, hot Korean desserts, and bingsu (a Korean shaved ice dessert with sweet toppings).

Located in the heart of Northbridge, Hanabing’s innovative and colourful desserts are candy to the eye, from their soft-serve “Cloud 9 Gelato”, topped with Oreos and a giant cloud of fairy floss, to flavours such as roasted matcha, rainbow taro, and royal milk tea.

FRY’D

Location: 138b Oxford St, Leederville

A crispy, golden deep fried treat | @Fry’d

Decked out with bright pink walls and neon lights, FRY’D is Perth’s most experimental ice cream store to date. Its premium Italian gelato is encased in a hot and crispy outer shell, making it the perfect balance of a hot and cold dessert.

They do a monthly ration of flavours including vanilla bean & salted caramel, cookies & cream, biscoff, pandan & coconut, baklava, and Ferrero Rocher. The creative team at FRY’D have even introduced the first-ever gluten-free vegan FRY’D ice cream.

Chicho Gelato

Location: 180 William St, Northbridge

Chunky cookies and cream | Chicho Gelato

Chicho Gelato makes all their gelato daily from scratch at their stores in Northbridge and Fremantle. The massive queue waiting to buy something is a testament to how good it is.

Try some of their more outlandish flavours like lavender & honeycomb, green tea & caramelised white chocolate, black sesame, and prickly pear.

Grab the ice cream takeaway and stroll through Yagan Square with friends or that special someone.

Whisk Creamery

Location: 246 William St, Northbridge

It’s almost too pretty to eat | Whisk Creamery

Looking for Instagram-worthy ice cream?

Head to Whisk Creamy – a store at the forefront of innovative desserts with a speciality in handmade soft-serve gelato and gelato using only high-quality fresh ingredients and age-old practices.

Prepare to be wowed by their unicorn and mermaid-themed gelato featuring a delicious vanilla base topped with roasted marshmallows and sprinkles. Or dive into the more classic flavours like matcha green tea, creamy Italian hazelnut, and mango sorbet, served in a cup, waffle cone or Japanese-fish cake (Taiyaki).

Gusto Gelato

Location: 5 Geoffrey Bolton Av, Perth

A hidden surprise | @dan.bird92

Stroll through Elizabeth Quay with a delicious scoop of handmade ice cream from Gusto Gelato. This family-owned business lives up to its title as one of the best gelaterias in Perth as its desserts are influenced by traditional artisan production techniques learnt in the Italian town of Bologna.

There are the standard flavours of lemon, vanilla, chocolate, hazelnut, and cappuccino. Keep an eye out in store for special flavours of the month.

If you’ve wanted to learn the difference between gelato and ice cream or how to make a traditional Italian gelato, Gusto Gelato offers classes taught by the founder and Head Gelatiere.

You’ll get the chance to get your hands dirty and make some gelato. To top it off you’ll leave the class with a one-litre tub of gelato to enjoy at home.

Kuld Creamery

Location: Laneway @, 460 Beaufort St, Highgate

A selection of Kuld Creamery’s finest | Kuld Creamery

Kuld Creamery never fails to impress Perth locals and travellers with their monthly range of playful, nostalgic and original flavoured ice cream influenced by their North American roots.

Flavours are changed monthly, to keep regulars on their toes, with the most popular combinations coming back for encores throughout the year.

Their ice cream is made using locally sourced ethical dairy and their vegan ice cream is a combination of cashew cream and organic coconut milk.

Make sure to head to their pop-up store at the Basin on Wadjemup / Rottnest Island – hurry though, they’re only here for the summer.

Dumbo Gelato

Location: 148 The Esplanade, Scarborough

Try a delicious Mango Sorbet | Dumbo Gelato

Dumbo Gelato‘s brother and sister duo, Kane Hipper and Stevie Gale, create edible memories from their childhood.

Hipper and Gale combine typical Aussie flavours — think cheese and Vegemite scrolls and lamingtons —with traditional gelato-making techniques, honing their craft with a three-week studying stint at the Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna in 2019.

Don’t worry though, there are still the classic Italian flavours of pistachio and hazelnut for those looking for something more traditional.

Organic milk from Margaret River Dairy forms the base of the gelatos, while the chocolate comes from Margaret River chocolatiers Bahen & Co, and seasonal fruit comes from the family farm.

Keep an eye out for their changing flavours of the month — this December’s being a Christmas pavlova ice cream with passionfruit and strawberry curd-laced meringue ice cream, topped with kiwifruit, passionfruit, strawberry, and crushed meringue.

Pietro Gelateria

Location: 789 Albany Highway, East Victora Park & 861 Beaufort Street, Inglewood

Handmade every day, Pietro Gelateria only uses natural ingredients in their gelato, picking local produce when it is in season and tastes the best.

Every month, a new flavour series is launched. Each series is based on a particular genre and sees anywhere between four to six limited-edition flavours made available. Keep an eye on their socials to see what they are.

December’s flavours are Christmas-inspired and include cassata – a traditional cake from Sicily moistened with fruit juice or liqueur, ricotta cheese, and candied fruit – mascarpone & drunk panettone, and rice crispy, raspberry and white chocolate crispy.

Permanent flavours include vanilla, chocolate, lavender and earl grey, coconut & pandan, mint stracciatella, and ricotta, orange, and dark chocolate. Enjoy the gelato by the scoop, in a take-home tub, stuffed into a cannoli, or alongside a piece of cake.

Billy van Creamery

Location: Karrinyup Shopping Centre, 200 Karrinyup Road

Passing over the goods | Billy van Creamery

Every ice cream at Billy van Creamery is made by hand using organic milk and high-quality seasonal ingredients. They pride themselves on having no ‘funny stuff’ in their ice creams, with no artificial stabilisers, emulsifiers, colours, or flavours. Instead, things like free-range egg yolks and fresh fruit are used.

This gelateria’s flavours are quite traditional, with the likes of vanilla, chocolate, salted caramel, honeycomb, cookies and cream, espresso, and choc mint on the menu. They cater for vegans, too, trading out dairy for house-made cashew milk and coconut milk in some of their tubs.

Stella Gelato

Location: 7790 West Swan Road, West Swan

Stella Gelato — named after the Italian word for ‘star’ — is an ode to the Starr family name and their love of Italian gelato.

At home in the Swan Valley, the gelato store makes their product fresh each day from the produce that surrounds them. As well as the staples, the Starr’s have been known to dabble with combinations like french vanilla with honey butter caramel chips, blood orange and dark chocolate Rocher chocolate ripple, and deep fried gelato with toffee sauce.

For something a little different, try their gelato sandwiched between two handmade waffles, the perfect combination of hot and cold, and crunchy and smooth.

Never miss a bite or a sip of Perth’s best eats and drinks.
