Tempura, sushi, sashimi, katsu, ramen, udon, karaage… oh yes Japan is the origin of some truly great food items, and here in Perth we have an excellent representation of the cuisine. It’s the kind of food we can all eat any time of the year, any time of the day, and it will always hit the spot.

So add these Japanese restaurants to your dining wishlist and start ticking them off. Meshiagare.

Tsukaya

Modern Japanese with a Peruvian twist is the essence of Mount Hawthorn’s Tsukaya.

It may seem a little plain visually, but the food is so exciting and worthy of celebration. The menu reads like a dining wishlist, and there’s often surprising specials that the chef puts on each evening based on seasonal produce (hello black miso cod).

This is one you won’t want to miss out on trying.

Dining Akashi

Calling all tempura fanatics, Applecross’s Dining Akashi is what you’re looking for. Their set menu comes as a small or standard size, and yes it heroes tempura but you’ll also be treated to sashimi, ngiri and more.

It’s a special spot, and a little fancy but it’s accessible, friendly and delightful.

Yuuma

Nestled on the strip in Victoria Park, Yuuma is a small little café/restaurant that has real Japanese soul.

The sashimi is sliced fresh on order, and has more than just your run of the mill tuna and salmon. The bento boxes are epic – get your hands on the miso fish or the wagyu, or the lamb.

Or convince your friends to get one of each so you can try them all.

Main Street Ryu

It’s a whole lotta fun at Perth CBD’s Main Street Ryu.

Located on Barrack Street, this place is reminiscent of Melbourne’s Mr Miyagi, with sushi tacos, and other modern interpretations of well known Japanese dishes. The flavours are zingy, the beers ice-cold and the setting relaxed.

It’s good times, and good eats too and Main Street Rya as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Perth.

Kishi Sushi Bar

Squirrelled away in the Perth Hills is Kishi Sushi Bar.

It doesn’t get more traditional than this little hole in the wall, with a menu that is straight out of Japan on paper and in flavour. The menu is seasonal, but still maintains it’s deep roots which makes it even more worth the drive out to Kalamunda.

Marumo

How can one talk about Marumo and not openly gush?

If you’re of the privileged that walk among us that have actually dined here, you’ll be quick to agree at just how special it is. The wait list is long and you need to put it in your diary to remember to book, but the omakase here is nothing short of incredible.

Enjoy a long evening with your BYO wine, and be wowed by course after course of expertly delivered Japanese food.

Edosei

Located in the heart of Perth CBD, Edosei is a restaurant dedicated to the fresh and unique styles of Japanese cooking.

The sashimi and sushi is of an excellent quality, but there’s also some other crowd pleasers like agedashi tofu, karaage chicken and ramen too. Stop by for a speedy workday lunch, or take your time at dinner – the world is your oyster.

The Modern Eatery

Fremantle and Mount Lawley’s The Modern Eatery is one of the best Japanese places to dine at in Perth.

It’s a great menu, a cute décor (hello neon cat on the wall) and fresh, flavourful food. The aburi salmon is heaven-sent, and the crunchy salad makes veggies oh so fun.

This place ticks all of our boxes.

Jun

Hidden in a Hay Street basement in Perth is where you’ll find Restaurant Jun.

It’s a lesser-known joint but really holds deep traditional roots in the way they cook. Ideal for a casual bite that packs a punch, it’s worth getting a little lost while trying to locate it.

D’s Authentic Japanese

The art of Japanese cuisine has been honed in and perfected at Connolly’s D’s Authentic Japanese.

It’s a refined, but traditional cooking style that shows the ingredients in their best light – while making your eyes roll back in happiness simultaneously. And for those who love their seafood, D’s also hold some fun tuna parties which celebrate one of Japan’s most cherished fish in all their glory. Fatty toro (belly) anyone?

We’re here for it.

Nobu

Of course no best Japanese restaurants in Perth list would be complete with the addition of Crown Perth’s Nobu.

A longstanding resident at the casino complex, and part of a global chain that is easily one of the most recognisable for fine dining.

From elevated bento boxes, to joy-inducing popcorn prawns and the ever-famous miso black cod… it’s all tasty and all part of why this place has the reputation it does. Make sure you save room for dessert too, they always hit the spot.

Tsunami

Izakaya restaurant, sushi bar and teppanyaki bar: Mosman Park’s Tsunami has it all.

The modern take on Japanese fusion has our tastebuds watering, not to mention the fact that they’re home to WA’s largest sake list on offer. The teppanyaki bar is ultra fun if you like a little show with your dinner, with the chefs cooking right before you – flipping, dicing and spinning the food as they do.

The Bonsai Restaurant & Café Lounge

It’s a longstanding Northbridge resident, but that doesn’t take away the shine that The Bonsai Restaurant & Café Lounge possesses.

Boasting an incredible teriyaki toothfish that melts in your mouth, the menu also holds some traditional and contemporary Japanese fare to delight all diners. Enjoy the great service, the smiles and every delicious morsel they have to offer.
