Best small bars in Perth that you must visit.

Creating a list of the best small bars in Perth is a lot harder than you think.

Small bars, big souls and even bigger fun.

In our opinion, Perth has an incredible and thriving small bar scene that hits hard all year round (minus COVID-19 shutdowns).

Curl up in hidden corners, indulge with well-curated cocktail lists and nibble away on some of the best bites on offer – there’s no better time than now to support local and hit up our list of the very best small bars in Perth.

Alfred’s Pizzeria

If you’ve walked past a red telephone booth on Barrack Street in Perth city and not realised it led to one of Perth’s best small bars, we wouldn’t blame you.

Alfred’s Pizzeria is a total blink and you’ll miss it entrance, but when you head down the stairs to the prohibition-style oasis below, it’s an absolute vibe.

Heavy pizza scent floods the air, there’s memorabilia and trinkets covering all surfaces and the cocktails are nothing short of fierce.

This CBD joint is one of the best small bars in Perth to head to on a night out – rain, hail or shine.

L’Chaim

Toast to life with this charming small bar located behind a bookcase (yes you read that right) in Fremantle’s Old Synagogue.

Step back in time at L’Chaim (pronounced Le-Hyme) as you sink into the intimate booths, sip on old fashioned, delicious cocktails and feel transported to a whole other time and place. Part of the fun is locating the hidden bar so take to the venue and start exploring from top to bottom – it’s the treasure at the end of the rainbow.

Foxtrot Unicorn

Good booze. Better times.

Now, this is a motto we can totally support, and that’s why Perth’s Foxtrot Unicorn has won a place in our hearts. Plus they’re rocking a serious toasted sandwich game, and that in itself is worth a shoutout beyond the tasty drinks the bar slings.

Is it just us, or is melted cheese an aroma every venue needs to have bottled and misted regularly?

They say the best small bars in Perth are hard to find – hiding underground in an old bank vault built in 1887, some of our city’s most awarded bartenders call this place their second home (as well as working here) so you’re in good company for guaranteed eclectic palate-pleasing fun.

Bobeche

Charisma, charisma, charisma – oh and the ever-tantalising scent of fresh popcorn too.

When it comes to being the best small bars in Perth for after-work drinks, Brookfield Place’s Bobeche is an after-work mecca and has been a stable in the best small bars in Perth scene for a while now.

The lights are dim, the bartenders perfect in their technique, and the drinks well crafted. Forget spilling the tea and indulge in a teapot punch instead – after all, cocktails are best shared in a group!

Best of all, if you get a little snacky, you can order food which comes from their second story sister venue, the Heritage, so you know it’s going to be damn good.

Wines of While

Part bar, part small wine store, all heart – that’s the best way to think of Northbridge’s Wines of While.

They’re a spot dedicated to sourcing natural wines: born from vines that are grown without chemicals, made by hand and without artifice. The result is a well-curated selection that is drinkable, delightful and diverse.

Whether you drop in for a bite and sip, or take away some goods for your next stop, it’s well worth paying special attention to this wonderful location.

Strange Company

Is it possible to be so hard in love with a place you’d move in there if you could?

That’s how we feel about Fremantle’s Strange Company… trust that the obsession is totally real. It’s somehow cosy and open at the same time, comforting and vibrant. The food is on a level on its own (hello potato croquette with mojo picante and wagyu carpaccio, we’re looking at you), but the drinks are nothing short of excellent too. Order a brew, indulge in a glass of red or cheers with a spritz.

Whatever strikes your fancy, these guys will be sure to put their strange little twist on it.

Ezra Pound

Among the first wave of small bars that opened in Perth back in 2009, Ezra Pound is a Northbridge institution.

The prohibition style venue has a slight grungy feel, with moody laneway vibes and libations that surprise and delight at the same time. Its welcoming and low key, which makes it the ideal venue for couples or groups seeking a relaxed atmosphere.

With over a decade under its belt, we hope this powerhouse continues to grace us all with its presence.

Goody Two’s

They say good things happen in twos but there’s more than a couple reasons to visit Hibernian Place’s Goody Two’s.

It’s a little boujie, a little cheeky and a little quirky, all in one. It borrows inspiration from the Japanese after work culture, slinging out some incredible izakaya style snacks to go hand in hand with their large selection of whiskies and drinks.

With live DJs performing in this basement bar, you’ll be entertained from head to stomach to toe – making Goody Two’s one of the best small bars in Perth you need to visit ASAP.

La Madonna Nera

It’s dark, it’s mysterious and it’s all kinds of amazing in our opinion.

Mount Hawthorn’s La Madonna Nera is a little cucina and bar that focuses on having a local feel and open arms to all who grace its doors. The intimate nature of this haven is what makes it such a compelling place to visit, and the wine list is pure magic. You can start your evening here, or end it: either way, you’ll be enamoured by this Scarborough Beach Road addition.

Wine Merchant

State Building reopens with new look Wine Merchant

With a fresh makeover and and everything from A to Z and then back from Z to A when it comes to wine, the Wine Merchant is the perfect Perth small bar to relax and have a quiet intimate catch up with friends.

Best of all being located in the State Buildings, the Wine Merchant can be the perfect place for a pre-drink before a dinner booking or better yet that simple night cap before calling it a night.

Mummucc

For those playing along at home and crying out for a local suburban small bar North of the River, look no further than Wembley’s Mummucc.

It is absolutely heaven-sent, with small plates that will linger on your tongue long after you’ve swallowed the last bite. Curl around a table, order a bottle of wine (or two), and enjoy the beautiful hospitality from the team that brought us Monsterella just a few doors down.

Varnish on King

Down the stairs and amid a crowd that includes a mascot called Justin Beaver, you’ll feel so at home at Perth’s Varnish on King.

On of the most awarded bars in Perth you will instantly become fan and see why it is one of the best small bars in Perth.

It’s snug, there’s whiskey aplenty, and there’s American comfort food that will warm you from the inside out. Try a bacon flight or cheers over a shaken cocktail. This little hidden bar has stood the test of time, and continues to impress to this day.

You wouldn’t normally associate nightlife with Bayswater but at King Somm you will find one of the very best small bars in Perth.

King Somm provides punters with a relaxed atmosphere allowing you to pair craft beer on tap, delicious cocktails and or an extensive wine list (they have a wine bottle shop attached) with Masterchef approved pizzas and eats.
