We dined at Pan Pacific’s new pop-up restaurant Picaresque at ‘The Stage’.

A step through plush velvet curtains reminiscent of broadway theatre and you’ll emerge into another world of dimly-lit dining and evening tipples.

Perth’s dining scene has been firing up lately, and The Stage at Pan Pacific Perth is the newest tasty addition. So naturally, we had to try it out.

The Stage is set to host a lineup of show-stopping performances, carefully crafted cocktails, and pop-up dining concepts, and kicked off with the launch of Picaresque on Thursday, May 26th.

The venue at first sight was a real treat. A blend of old and new world theatre with vibrant artwork, sheer curtains, ambient candlelight, and a good dose of glamour, with the smells of Spain wafting out from the kitchen.

Picaresque: A sensational taste of Spain

The menu showcases dishes from eight different destinations across Spain and takes inspiration from traditional Spanish tabernas.

It comes in both four or six-course options, and the bold flavours were said to be slightly mischievous, slightly cheeky, and 100% unique. Expect the unexpected as Executive Sous Chef Xerxes Bodhanwala serves up plates that challenge traditional dishes and authentic cooking recipes through a blend of locally sourced produce and authentic Spanish ingredients.

What’s on the menu

We were lucky enough to experience the full deal with a taste of the El Gran Menu paired alongside Spanish wines, and boy did it impress.

We started off with a simple yet pleasing house-marinated Alto misto olives from Jaén paired alongside Spanish sherry, as well as Catalonian Croquetas de Ibérico topped with a seared bluefin tuna belly and wafers with marinated sardine slices and caviar. If the first few dishes were anything to go by, we were in for an exquisitely delicious ride.

Next up our tastebuds were treated to aged Iberico Jamon on toasted bread with juicy crushed tomatoes, melt-in-your-mouth octopus sous vide style and a traditional paella with Pardoo Station wagyu beef that went down within mere minutes. Side note: as someone who’s never been a huge seafood fan, the octopus was a surprising favourite of the night. Yeah, it’s that good.

Bellies nearly popping and after a quick pause to marvel at the talented Flamenco dancer, we gathered our remaining strength to come home strong with dessert; a 16-month aged Manchego cheese served with Inés Rosales and natural honeycomb, followed by caramelised brioche with leche merengada ice cream.

Now, let’s talk drinks.

Picaresque features a vibrant cocktail list crafted by the hotel’s mixologists that puts a twist on some Spanish classics like a Piña Picante margarita or a punchy Marianito made with Campari, Red Vermouth, and Tanqueray Gin.

You’ll also find a curated wine list of WA and Spanish varietals, rose and Blanco sangria, Spanish beer and Spanish cava by the glass. Our personal favourite of the evening was a 2020 Navarro López ‘Tierracalar’ Joven Tempranillo that went down a treat.

To sum up the evening in one word? WOW.

It’s a definite recommendation for anyone looking for a romantic date night or a dining experience vastly different to your usual haunt.
