The Table Sour is a collaboration between Busselton’s favourite brewery, Shelter Brewing Co, and iconic Perth fashion store Highs and Lows.

Shelter Brewing Co‘s head brewer, Jason Credaro, loves a straight, crisp lager. But, he’s no stranger to tinkering with and adding to what’s bubbling away in the venue’s 25HL tanks either.

The mammoth Busselton foreshore-based brewery – designed by the same team behind Fremantle’s Little Creatures – has been open just over a year now, and we’ve already seen some pretty damn cool limited edition brews come from them.

There was the surprisingly amber (not black) coloured squid ink XXPA, then a collab coconut sour with Hillzeez that stirred up all the nostalgia of opening up a new pack of surfboard wax in the summer.

The next cab off the fun-and-interesting-beer rank for Shelter is the ‘Table Sour’.

Brewed in collaboration with iconic Perth streetwear store, Highs and Lows, the Table Sour is a modern Australian take on the traditional table sour.

“Traditionally a table sour is a low alcohol beer that families and workers would share around the lunch or dinner table after a hard day’s work,” said Credaro. “We wanted to bring that idea into modern Australia and produce a beer to be enjoyed at the beach, a picnic, holiday lunch with friends and family – all these events that are iconic parts of the Australian summer.”

It was Matt and the Highs and Lows crew that came up with the flavour profile of the beer, suggesting a combination of two ultra summery ingredients – local peaches and west Aussie saltbush.

The result? A refreshing, easy-drinking beer with a wild combination of fruit and herb characteristics. It’s a complex yet structured and balanced beer, and, at just 2.4% ABV, it’s perfectly session-able.

The Table Sour is available in cans as well as in 750ml wine bottles – the ultimate backyard barbecue accompaniment.

Tasting notes:

The Table Sour presents a harmony of fruit, herb and spice flavours and aromas. Local stone fruit shines amidst guava, cinnamon, rosemary and orange peel characters and an acidic kiwi tang. The local saltbush dry hop brings a herbaceous touch to this perfectly-balanced, well-bodied beer.
