With the sun setting on the warmer months, most markets throughout Perth close their doors or take a well-deserved break.

After all, running around with gusts of wind competing for space under your umbrella while you juggle plates of food can be entertaining – but it can also be a little exhausting!

So that’s why I really like City of Perth’s Winter Supper Club held in the Perth Town Hall undercroft and foyer.

I really look forward to our annual Winter Supper Club. Firstly, it’s nice to know you’ll be out and about in cold weather and yet will stay dry and toasty.

Secondly, having access to a great range of international street food is always a positive experience – especially because so many of Perth’s market stalls and food trucks use passed down family recipes, and have a real passion for serving delicious food.

And then the cherry on top is there’s also a pop up bar for a cheeky tipple or two of mulled wine or a winter cocktail to warm your insides.

Or if you prefer, grab a peppermint hot chocolate: I like to think of it as a dessert in a cup!

cocktailWith Winter Supper Club running on the last Friday of winter months (24 June, 29 July and 26 August) from 5pm to 9pm, I know I’ll be setting time aside in my diary to pop in and get my market food craving fix.

I’m a bit of a soup fiend, so I know for me Suppa Club’s pumpkin and coconut soup (which is vegan friendly) will be a real draw card.

Steaming hot, rich with flavour and if I’m in the mood for carbs (I always am), it can come served in a bread bowl which soaks up all that soupy goodness.

LaBombettaBut I need to remind myself not to go too crazy on just the one stall, no matter how good they are.

There are definitely a lot of strong, affordable contenders to suit different tastebuds.

La Bombetta are one I’m particular fond of – and this is their debut year as part of these markets.

Their grass-fed beef and potato galette with smoked onion puree sounds restaurant quality, and the exact kind of food this frosty winter weather begs for.

Something else that has caught my eye is Twin Beaks confit duck brioche burgers.

This is a nice variation on your normal beef or chicken offering for most burgers around town, and you can choose one of three topping combinations to enjoy with.

The pecorino with truffle oil and caramelised onion is calling my name… and just at the right time since truffles are now in season.

There’s some of Perth’s favourite food trucks taking part in the markets too, spilling out onto Hay Street and pumping out goods like arepas, ravioli and Turkish lamb and okra with pomegranate.

It’s a cultural melting pot and I can only imagine how amazing the smells wafting on the chilly breeze will be.

ChocolateBeing in such close proximity to the recently revamped State Buildings, it only makes sense for Sue Lewis Chocolatier to get involved in this year’s Winter Supper Club.

This is one of my all-time favourite businesses for a sugar fix, and I can’t wait to try some of Sue’s melt in your mouth chocolate truffles.

HoneycakeTo be honest, there’s just so many food options you’ll need all three nights (and a group of friends to share the goods between) to try them all.

But it’s not just about what’s on to eat (though this alone is enough to get my attention), there’s also roving accordion, guitar and ukulele players to enhance the atmosphere with their free musical offering.

This is the fifth year the markets will be running for, and there are a total of 7 new additions to the changing lineup of 18 vendors of stalls and food trucks.

It’s a great way to support local small businesses right in the heart of our city. If you see me there I’ll probably have my camera in one hand, and a plate (or three) of food in my other.

What a way to start the weekend!
