Construction at the new Elizabeth Quay development is starting to look less like a big sandy hole in the ground and more like the ‘artists impression‘ version.

Below: A Tweet from Adam Astro on Monday, May 18, 2015 shows the action at Elizabeth Quay.

It appears construction of several key buildings is now well under way, even with the new cove seemingly far from completion, with much of the sand still remaining.

Starting later in 2015, Elizabeth Quay will be partly open to the public and by November 2015 much of the public space will be accessible.

However some key private infrastructure, including the new Ritz Carlton Hotel, office towers (major tenant Chevron) and other commercial and residential real estate won’t be finished into well into 2016 or 2017.

The project is costing the WA Government $440 million and is designed to reconnect the Perth CBD with the Swan River, “giving Perth locals and visitors an exciting new place to explore,” says the MRA.

The project includes an island at the mouth of the quay, and it looks like part of that is well under construction.

Other major features include the ‘BHP Billiton Water Park,’ a split-level promenade stretching 1km, ‘The Inlet’ that will include 24 short stay berths for Perth’s boating community – that’s a 150 meter wide and 200 mete long waterway that will become part of the new face of Perth.

The Island:

After careful reconstruction work, the original 1928 Florence Hummerston Kiosk will be reopened as a family friendly cafe offering food and refreshments, with plans also underway to add a children’s playground and public art. A jetty on the eastern side of The Island will accommodate the seasonal mooring of the Duyfken, with a bridge to link the precinct back to the other areas of Elizabeth Quay.

The Inlet:

The water body will host 24 short stay berths and can be used for special events such as boat shows, marine events, concerts or performances. The inlet will be a hive of activity when public ferries relocate from Barrack Street Jetty to a new ferry terminal on the western promenade. A bridge across the inlet will a stunning architectural feature and will provide a popular vantage point for river views, as well as recreate the popular ‘bridges’ recreational circuit around the Swan River.

The Promenade:

Stretched over an area of around 1km, the split-level promenade will feature a busy pedestrian area on the upper level with a more casual space at the lower level. A ribbon of trees will provide shaded places for visitors, shoppers and alfresco diners to relax and enjoy the inlet views.

BHP Billiton Water Park:

The water feature covers over 470sqm and will become a place where children and families can come to relax, splash around and cool off.
