Dockers Remain Undefeated After Demolishing Demons #AFLDeesFreo

BREAKING NEWS: Dockers won a second half!!

It’s about time! And even though Freo won by 68 points, there was still a lot of “what the heck are they doing?!” being yelled at the TV by my mum and I as we watched the game play out. I felt as though Freo seemed a little bit lost in the first half and couldn’t hit targets inside their 50 as well as they usually do. They were rushing their kicks, kicking to two/three on one’s and just making some terrible decisions. They should really have won by 100+ points.

Melbourne did well to hang on in the first half without big forward Chris Dawes, with the margin only 20 points at half time. The Demon’s defence picked off every one of Fremantle inaccurate kicks or handballs inside 50 and did well to get it back out to the centre, Tom McDonald being very effective. Jeff Garlett was dangerous in Melbourne’s forward, taking a ripper mark and bagging himself 3 goals.

Ross Lyon couldn’t find anything to celebrate and you could practically see the smoke coming out of his ears. However, after two of Freo’s main forwards Matty Pavlich and Michael Walters were benched due to concussions, the Dockers surprisingly seemed to gain a little bit more momentum. David Mundy, Chris Mayne and Nat Fyfe (of course) were strong through the midfield, constantly offering second efforts.

Just quietly, how good is Luke McPharlin?? He has got to be one of the most effect defenders in the competition. So far this season he has kept big names such as Buddy Franklin, Josh Kennedy and Tom Hawkins to minimal stats and Fremantle are incredibly lucky to have him. Along with Michael Johnson and Garrick Ibbotson (who often gets overlooked) any opposition would find it difficult to come up with a game plan to get around those boys.

I’m questioning the decision of Hayden Ballantyne’s automatic inclusion into the side after being sidelined for two weeks due to suspension. He scraped up a measly 9 possessions and just 1 point to his name, which as a forward isn’t really good enough. I think Tendai Mzungu’s presence around the ground would have been more beneficial AND he usually manages to snap a cheeky goal or two to ice off his game.

Dockers are now 5 wins from 5 and will look to continue their winning streak against the Bombers at home on Saturday May 9th.

Four #AFLDeeFreo Talking Points:

  • Hayden Ballantyne needs to find some form if he wants to stay in the side
  • Luke McPharlin is a shoe-in for All Australian team
  • Dockers need to work on their delivery into the forward line ahead of clash with the Bombers
  • With no Lewis the Brownlow is Fyfe’s for the taking
