Jetstar Melbourne Margaret River flights to begin in 2020
In what will be a boon for the Margaret River region, Jetstar will begin flights directly between Melbourne and Busselton in 2020, So Perth understands.
Flights will go on sale soon for less than $100 one-way between Melbourne and the Margaret River region, which will ignite a Tourism boom in the area.
The first flight between Melbourne and Busselton Airport will be in March or April, with an official announcement coming this week. The initial flights will be scheduled for three or four times per week. These could increase depending on demand.
It means, for the first time, east coast visitors to the south-west of Western Australia can avoid having to travel to Perth, before heading down south, usually by hire car.
Earlier this year, City of Busselton Mayor Grant Henley confirmed there were ongoing negotiations with Jetstar about the direct flights from Melbourne.
The news is just a first step for the region, likely to open up direct flights between other Australian capitals, as well as see more cashed up visitors from cities like Singapore.
In order to handle the new influx of wine tourists, the Busselton Airport needs $60 million in infrastructure upgrades, which is likely to be funded by government.
The new Jetstar Melbourne Margaret River route will also allow people living in the South-West a direct flight to Melbourne, saving a trip to Perth Airport.
Earlier this year, WA Nationals MP Terry Redman said domestic and possible international flights would be an economic game changer.
“It has been predicted that providing visitors a direct gateway into one of WA’s top tourism destinations would pump an extra $11.4 million into the South West economy per year,” he said.
