Enough of this ‘winter’ thing already Perth.

If you were thinking that it feels like it hasn’t stopped raining in Perth throughout July – you wouldn’t be far off the mark.

The Bureau of Meteorology has recorded only 3 days throughout July where Perth hasn’t received any rainfall, which would explain why Subiaco flooded.

But just how wet has it been this July in Perth? Are we overreacting in true Perth style when there is a bit of wet stuff falling from the sky that’s known as rain – which is common during a season they call ‘winter’?

Well, we decided to dive into the stats from the Water Corporation and Bureau of Meteorology to see just how wet it’s been this month.

Perth Rainfall year to date comparison table

The table below shows that Perth has had significant July rainfall that is well above average.

Last year Perth only recorded 83mm in July compared to the 215.6mm we have currently recorded with 5 days remaining in the month.

From 1994 to 2019, Perth recorded 145.3mm of rainfall in July and from 1876 to 2016 an average of 167.7mm.

To date, Perth has experienced above-average rainfall for the year as well.

Is this the wettest July in history?

Currently, July 2021 hasn’t even reached the Top 10 of wet July’s.

While there are still 5 days remaining in the month and with the forecast of an additional 55mm to fall before the end of the month – 2021 could move into the Top 10 wettest July’s on record.

The highest rainfall ever recorded in Perth for July was in 1958 with 425.1mm of rain – no doubt the Swan River would have been at record levels that year.
