Up your pub game with Perth’s best steak sandwiches.
Arguably one of the best things to order at any pub, there’s no denying that we here in Perth have a love affair with the humble steak sandwich. The competition is fierce, the offerings varied.
But we think we’ve tracked down some of our Perth’s best steak sandwiches – best enjoyed with an ice-cold drink to wash it down.
Grilled steak, cheddar, fried egg and caramelised onions are a simple combination, but so harmonious together – especially with their crowd-pleasing fries. Their selection of drinks on offer is an extra incentive to head to South Terrace, and the vibe here has all the makings of a guaranteed good time out.
The Carlisle Hotel
Victoria Park’s The Carlisle Hotel has had their steak sandwich nominated for WA’s best in 2017, 2018 and 2019 – so it had to make this list.
MSA grade scotch fillet, spices and all the accompaniments your heart could ever want included are combined inside a warm ciabatta roll. Served with delicious fresh chips on the side, it totally hits the spot.
Mary Street Bakery
One of Perth’s favourite powerhouse cafes, Mary Street Bakery is also serving up one of Perth’s best steak sandwiches.
Mary Street Bakery has the upper hand when it comes to steak sandwiches thanks to their incredible and wildly popular bread.
There’s all different versions floating around, depending which MSB you head to – but they’re equally tasty. Highgate’s version with fried egg, tobacco onion, pepperonata and sriracha mayo puts one spin on the classic sandy, but then there’s West Leederville’s with onion jam, chipotle mayo and mojo verde with potato crisps on the side.
Or check out City Beach where it’s a brioche bun sandwich with smoked tomato relish, rocket and cheese with hand cut chips. And Allendale Square’s with aioli, mojo verde, rocket and caramelised onion.
My oh my, how can we even begin to decide.
The Merrywell is a regular when it comes to discussion on Perth’s best steak sandwiches.
The purists out there might tell you that a steak sandwich needs to be beef, but The Merrywell at Crown Perth is here to prove them wrong.
Their ‘Merry had a Lamb Sanga’ is the ultimate feed, with grilled lamb rump steak, chipotle & fig relish, beetroot pickle, feta mayonnaise and pistachios. It’s served on potato and roast onion bread, with some sweet potato fries in accompaniment.
Yep, there’s a lot going on here, but it all just works, and works darn well.
A former staple on Print Hall’s bar menu, nowadays you’ll find their steak sandwich more sporadically on offer and as a special guest star. But consider yourself lucky when that occasion rolls around.
It has a real luxurious feel to it thanks to the soft, sweet and buttery bread, and the medium-rare slices of steak melt in your mouth. It’s such an elegant version of this classic pub grub, and we’re totally into it.
Karalee on Preston
Awarded as WA’s best steak sandwich in 2014 and 2017, Karalee on Preston’s black Angus steak sandwich continues to reign supreme as a solid offering to this day.
It stands apart with it’s Turkish bread base, homemade barbecue sauce, crispy maple bacon, pepper jack cheese, marinated tomato, rocket and caramelised onion. Is your mouth watering yet? Ours definitely are.
CY O’Connor Village Pub
Piara Water’s CY O’Connor Village Pub has our vote just at mention of it’s truffle mayo.
But there’s so much more to this yummy offering with its brisket bacon, tomato, swiss cheese, field mushroom, rocket, crispy onions and barbecue sauce. The pub experience here is laid back and delightful, and the dishes really hit hard.
It’s no wonder when you ask around for a great steak sandy, people often will send you this way.
Rounding out our list of Perth’s best steak sandwiches is West Perth’s Mayfair Lane.
Constructed with Stirling Ranges scotch fillet cooked medium, lettuce, aioli, tomato and onion mushroom jam, plus chips, there’s also a secret ingredient that has us totally enthralled. Three. Cheese. Sauce.
Yes, you heard that right. And yes, it is everything you’re imagining just reading this. We’ll say it once more for added impact: three-cheese sauce. You’re welcome.
