Make the most of Autumn with these activities around Perth

Plenty of summer activities, plenty of winter activities- but when it comes to Autumn? It’s a seriously underrated season.

It’s the season of amber and gold, providing warm days and cooler nights for the best of both worlds after a sweltering summer.

There’s plenty on offer in Perth for some memorable Autumn activities from a refreshing trip to the countryside to wildlife encounters to fruit picking or a day of wine and good food.

Spot some whales

Did you know Autumn is the perfect time to catch the gentle giants of the ocean?

March to May is blue whale watching season in Perth as they prepare for their long migration north, and we’ve got one of the only spots in the world to sight them in the wild right in our own backyard, and Whale Watch Western Australia knows how to get you there.

You’ll head to Perth Canyon on one of their tours and get up alongside some Blue Whales as they hand around for a feed.

Go for a hike

There is no better time to stretch your legs and get out in nature to soak up some gorgeous Perth scenery. It’s not too hot, not too cold, but just right.

There are heaps of spots to choose from, but some of our top picks would include Eagle View Walk Trail at John Forrest National Park, Kitty’s Gorge out in the hills near Jarrahdale, the Bibbulmun Track, Whistlepipe Gully at Mundy Regional Park, or Lesmurdie Falls – but that’s just scratching the surface!

Head out early for that crisp morning air, or catch the last rays of sunshine before winter and make it a lunchtime adventure.

Take one last ocean dip

If there’s one thing we’re going to miss coming into the cold dark days of winter, it’s our salty ocean dips.

We’ve obviously got some of the best coastlines in Australia, and the world for that matter, so a few final ocean dips before the warm days get few and far between is a must-do.

You could just pop down to your local, or instead, take a bit of a journey and hit some of the favourites like Mullaloo, Cottesloe, City Beach, Scarborough, or Coogee.

Get adventurous

We’re big believers that Autumn is one of the greatest seasons for some epic outdoor activities.

Gather your crew and head out for some stunning scenery, a cold frothy and a side of history lessons (the good kind) with Pedal and Pint, or do something totally different and see Avon Valley up high with a hot air balloon adventure

Oh Hey WA  also run some pretty epic Perth tours where you can see the city in a whole new light with walks featuring street art, architecture, nightlife, a dose of history, and a gin masterclass.

If you’re keen on a little exercise and fresh air, the bike tours with GoGo Active will have you covered as you cycle alongside the stunning backdrop of the Swan River.

Visit some wineries

Any season is good for wine, but the cooler weather with a dose of sunshine coming into Autumn might just be our favourite.

It’s the perfect time to fire up the group chat and organise a day at some of Perth’s fabulous wineries like Lamont’s, Mandoon Estate, Olive Farm Wines, Pandemonium Estate, or Sandalford- just to name a few.

No time to organise? You can just jump on board with Out and About Wine Tours for a day of tasting and chatting up the experts at their top picks in the valley.

Have a picnic

We’re suckers for a nice family picnic on a sunny Sunday.

There is no better time to settle in among nature with a cool breeze and an epic picnic set up to chow down on your fave treats.

Not sure where to go? We’ve scouted out the best picnic spots around Perth so you don’t have to.

Snap some pics at Raeburn Orchards

It’s one of the most grammable spots in Perth, and it’s extra gorgeous in Autumn.

You’ll find Raeburn Orchards in the Perth Hills, about 30km out of the CBD. The insta-worthy spot is delightful all year round, but even more so when the crimson and orange leaves fall in Autumn. It’s a well-known haunt for photographers and is open to the public for orchard walks, photos, cider tastings, fresh fruit purchases, and lunch picnic-style with food vendors and cafes on-site.

Set up camp

The cooler nights and warmer days call for one thing- a weekend camping trip.

Get back in touch with nature and take some well-needed time out at some of the more scenic spots in Perth and its surroundings. You can set up waterfront at places like Honeymoon Pool, Moore River, and Lake Leschenaultia, or soak in the greenery at Contos in Boranup or Dwellingup Chalets and Caravan Park.

If the blow-up mattress and small tent aren’t your thing, try out some of the best glamping spots around Perth and WA for a much more luxurious adventure.

Pick some fruit

Fruit season is all year round, but Autumn is the perfect time to visit some orchards around Perth for juicy apples, pears, and sweet persimmons.

Finding a farm is easy enough, but our top recommendations would be a trip to Raeburn Orchards (they ace it on the persimmons front), The Orchard, The Fruit Corner, or S&R Orchard

Jump in a kayak

Get a hit of fresh air and get paddling for a day of breathtaking scenery, clear waters, and outdoor adventure.

You can opt to hire your own equipment and explore wherever your heart desires, or join in on a guided tour. Wildlife & Eco Kayak Tours do a good one along the Swan, or you can explore some cliffs and caves with GoGoActive

If you’re heading out of Perth for a weekend away then you have to try out Surf N Dirt Adventure Tours for their highly recommended kayaking and winery tour in Margaret River. You’ll float along the tranquil Blackwood River and enjoy the finest wine, gourmet food, and natural wonders. Make sure you ask for Mojo, your friendly Adventure Tour wonder dog.
