How to drive like a human in Perth

Local YouTuber Fionn Mulholland has created a 'How To' video to educate the public on how to drive like a human in Perth and it is well worth the watch

It has been well documented that us Perth drivers aren’t the best in Australia, which initially lead to creation of the article ‘How to Merge in Perth‘. Also here to help is local YouTuber, Fionn Mulholland. Fionn has created a ‘How To’ video to educate the public on how to drive like a human in Perth and it is well worth the watch.

Warning this video may… does contain coarse language

We spoke with Fionn to ask him how and why he came up with the video idea.

Q: How did you come up with the idea
A: I had the idea for the video after having so many near misses on Perth roads over the years. My thinking was that any video would have to be a bit quirky to have any sort of impact on peoples driving habits. I think people are tired of the serious and morbid approach that’s used in media campaigns.

Q: Before making such a video was there research of the actual road rules?
A: I trawled through The Department of Transports Handbook to make sure that the advice was as sound as it could be, amongst Ryan’s drunken and frustrated ramblings.

Q: I noticed different backdrops while Ryan was ‘driving’ how did you capture that footage?
A: We shot it in my apartment’s parking bay, with a green sheet draped over some fridge boxes to create the green screen. My partner Kathleen helped pickup the background shot by driving down the freeway while I shot out the window from the back seat (Seat belt securely fastened of course).

Two days after filming, I was driving down Canning Highway, passing a line of traffic stopped behind a bus in the left lane when a driver pulled out into my lane without looking and crashed into the side of my car. If only I’d had the video put together quicker, I could have saved a trip to the panel beaters. The other driver was at fault so it did’t cost me anything, thankfully.
