The Sebel East Perth

Many people may know East Perth for its picturesque Claisebrook Cove, The Royal on the Waterfront, and numerous other cafés and restaurants – and that’s fair enough. It’s a fantastic inner-city sanctuary, perfect for a day out to enjoy breakfast, brunch, a walk along the river, a Sunday session or a romantic dinner by the water. But what if you could spend more than just a few hours here? What if you could have a full-blown urban escape right in the heart of this vibrant area, located just a short walk or free CAT-bus ride from the CBD? Well, you can.

Perched directly above The Royal is The Sebel East Perth, boasting a conference room and 57 spacious, non-smoking apartments, many of which overlook the stunning cove precinct. Its discreet entrance on Royal Street is not what you would necessarily expect of a 4-star hotel, and that’s precisely how they like it, because the whole concept of The Sebel is to function as a home away from home – something reflected both in its facilities and in the small, dedicated team of staff, who provide friendly, personalised service. I’m yet to find another hotel which can even lend solo travellers a PET FISH (there are 3 to choose from – they’re in bowls on the reception desk) for company.

The open design of the intimate lobby automatically invites you to step beyond its glass doors and down a lush boardwalk, bringing you out into its open-air, resort-style BBQ area with heated lap pool and sweeping views over the entire Claisebrook Cove. This is not your average sun deck.

And when it’s time to head back inside, retreat to your comfortable self-contained studio, one-bedroom apartment or two-bedroom apartment (a studio and one-bedroom apartment with connecting door), all of which feature modern, fully-equipped kitchens or kitchenettes, dining areas and work stations. As such, the property is more than able to cater to both short-stay and long-stay guests – there’s even an in-room dishwasher! Other amenities include irons and ironing boards, iPod/iPad docking stations, laundry facilities (not in studios), flat-screen TVs and complimentary WiFi.

Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. If you have any special requests – perhaps you want to have some people over and need a few extra bits and pieces? – they will do all they can to source it for you. Think of it as your home. While the standard rule for housekeeping is 3 days, a daily service may be arranged upon request (at a charge). Bathrooms are bright and functional (rooms with tubs are available on request), and come with Australian-owned organic Appelles toiletries.

The décor in general is modern, casual and homely, accentuated with bright colours to make you feel relaxed and at ease. Many rooms also have private balconies, where you can watch the sunrise over Trafalgar Bridge, or enjoy a lazy afternoon drink as you gaze out over the water – if you’re lucky, you may even see some dolphins.

While there are no actual in-house dining facilities, the hotel does offer charge-back facilities for numerous bars, cafés and restaurants right on its doorstep (including The Royal on the Waterfront, Toast, The Partisan, Kinky Lizard and Antico, among others). Also in the local area are high-end establishments like Co-Op Dining and multi-award-winning Restaurant Amusé.

Guests wanting to top up on their groceries can take advantage of an online grocery service (and feel free to help yourself to the bowl of green apples at reception), or do their own shopping at the IGA supermarket across the street. A liquor store and pharmacy are also in the immediate vicinity.

While you’re in this part of town, you may want to explore the surrounding area. The hotel has four bikes available for hire for those who like to get around on two wheels, and has limited underground parking for those with cars. But even if you’re just up for a leisurely stroll, simply follow the cove out towards the river – you’ll get a great view of the new Perth Stadium construction while you’re at it. Crown Casino, the WACA, Gloucester Park and the Perth Mint are similarly all within walking distance. Or take a ride on the Little Ferry Co., which docks right in front of the hotel, and operates daily to Elizabeth Quay and South Perth.

East Perth is all about lifestyle, and The Sebel epitomises this. It may well be Perth’s best kept secret. If you’re looking for an inner-city staycation to escape the daily grind without travelling too far, this could be just the place.
