This FREE event will take over the Leederville town centre from 12pm – 9pm with over 80,000 people expected over the day and evening.  The village-style festival through Oxford, Newcastle, Carr Streets and the surrounding alleys and laneways is offering the most diverse and engaging program since it began four years ago.  Locals and visitors can take in a massive live entertainment line-up over four main stages, a dedicated land of children’s fun, alfresco and street food, pop-up festival bars, market stalls, live art, plenty of culture and even a 3m inflatable dancing marshmallow man in the street!

Mayor John Carey will commence the official “Light Up Leederville Ceremony” on the Synergy Power Play stage at 7.30pm (on the corner of Oxford & Vincent Streets) where carnival-goers are urged to rally with their own torch/phone light ready to join in.  This part of the Carnival has become known for the special sense of spirit, unity and celebration, highlighting the affinity of the Leederville community,

Around 8pm countdown will begin to light up the sky with the Rohan Jewellery fireworks.  Cardile Fireworks have created a special PINK CRYSANTHEMUM as the grand finale; representing the renowned pink diamond that Rohan Jewellery specialises in.

In 2015, Leederville Lights Up with renewable energy – proudly declaring Light Up Leederville Carnival presented by Alcohol.Think Again. as WA’s first ever renewable-energy-powered street festival.   Carnival goers are urged to bring their riding legs Sunday as the Light Up Leederville Carnival expands into new and exciting operations territory in a bold initiative in partnership with Synergy. This Sunday, Synergy will power the 80,000-strong Carnival using only renewable energy sources.

Synergy intends to incorporate a number of different renewable energy options to powering the Leederville Carnival; with all stages and vendors to be powered off pedal, solar, wind and recycled oil energy sources.

“The Light Up Leederville Carnival presented by Alcohol.Think Again. this Sunday, will be the first time renewable energy has been used at an event of this scale in Western Australian history.  The Carnival and Leederville Connect commend Synergy in joining us to take this positive step into and beyond the 21st Century,” said Carnival Director Jimmy Murphy from Upbeat Events.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Secret Walls x Australia (4)

Secret Walls x Australia  – LIVE ART DISPLAY!

Secret Walls x Australia brings the world premier live art form seen in over 50+ countries to Leederville.  This is the “Fight Club” of the art scene, inspired by Marvel comics and graffiti; where the artists are armed solely with black markers and paint, going head to head on canvas (usually!). Secret Walls presents an Australian first at Light Up Leederville as two of Perth’s best street artists Jerome Davenport and Robert Jenkins face up in a live art battle right onto two high performance vehicles!  Accompanied by DJs, MC’s, voting power and time pressure, the thrill of watching freestyle artwork unfold before your eyes is an assault all the senses.

It all happens at 5.00pm in Carr place – with 90 minutes on the clock.  Paint Will Spill/Ink will Drop.

It’s called HQ for a reason; it’s where the action happens.  Across the day the doors are open for to all (particularly those with energy to burn!) with a non-stop vortex of activities, entertainment and generally a cool place to hang – and entry is FREE.  A showcase of live music from 3.00pm in the gig space is where HQ will uncover Perth’s exciting new bands and DJs.  And of course, add skate to the slate with skating activations across the day, live street art displays, basketball, gaming and a few more surprises.

LEEDERVILLE CULTURE

Celebrating our Aboriginal Culture

Lake Monger and surrounds, including the Leederville area is a traditional noongar meeting place.

Life is a web of inter-relationships where maam and yok (men and women) and nature are partners, and where kura (long ago, the past) is always connected to yey (present). Leederville Connect brings a taste of traditional occupiers of this lands culture in this year’s Carnival through Aboriginal paintings (sand Art), music and koroboree/kobori (dance) we are paying respect to our ancestral creators, and at the same time, strengthening our belief systems.

The Leederville Fabric:  Australia’s longest community-created bunting project!

Look above the Carnival grounds to see the unique community patchwork project that decorates the streets: The Leederville Fabric.  In the lead up to the Carnival, Foyer Oxford reached out to the community to help them celebrate the individuality and diversity of Leederville.  They have strung together thousands of a unique to create the decorative streamers that adorn the streetscapes (for the Carnival and beyond).

Luna Palace Cinemas presents the WALLS OF JOY

The iconic Luna Palace Cinemas on the corner of Oxford & Vincent Street in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, present the WALLS OF JOY (near Luna Cinemas and the other at Carr place).  To celebrate the release of the new Jennifer Lawrence movie JOY (from director David ‘Russell) in cinemas Boxing Day, the WALLS OF JOY are giant poster walls upon which anyone can become the artist or express themselves with their thoughts, dreams, hopes, or wish of joy for another.

TRANSPORT, ROAD CLOSURES AND GETTING THERE

Leederville Connect has worked hard to ensure there is minimal disruption to local businesses and residents in regards to this Sunday’s road closures for the Leederville Carnival.  For those who partake in a traditional Sunday breakfast, the roads may be closed but local cafes will still be open. There is very limited parking available close to the event venue, as such we recommend car pooling, getting dropped off/picked up or using alternate and more sustainable transport methods.

Please refer City of Vincent website for car park locations below, and or utilise street parking or car parks in surrounding suburbs such as West Leederville, West Perth, Northbridge and Mt Hawthorn.

  • The Avenue (access off Leederville Parade)
  • Frame Court, near Skate Park (access off Leederville Parade)
  • Leederville Hotel (Access off Vincent Street East, coming off Loftus Street)
