Strikers get burnt at the Furnace by an impressive Perth Scorchers outfit.

Summer is finally here!

Even though there was a 42.4C day earlier this week in Perth, it is only officially Summer in Perth once the Perth Scorchers take the field at ‘The Furnace’.

Despite the Warriors less than desirable performance in the Sheffield, the WACA was still packed with a sea of orange.

The start of the Scorchers BBL campaign was hot and cold with 4 runs off the first ball only to lose Klinger for just 1 run in the first over.

The Scorchers were given an early Christmas present when Jake Weatherald dropped Ian Bell in the first over on the first ball of his Scorchers debut. Gilly was shocked and the drop catch would end up hurting the Strikers, with Bell going from a ‘Golden Duck’ to 61 runs – so is the game of cricket.

Whiteman was the first to find the boundary for the Scorchers, which started to get the wheels in motion for the Scorchers, perhaps also calming the nerves of Bell who went on to hit back to back 4’s in the 3rd over.

The Strikers must have pushing a bit too much in the initial overs as they struggled with control – Stanlake didn’t help Adelaide’s cause after back to back 4’s from Bell gifting the Scorchers 2 runs with 2 wides in the over, giving the Scorchers 11 free runs within the first 3 overs of the match.

Bell began to settle in showing why he has been one of cricket’s premium batsmen throughout his career, highlighted by the Scorchers first 6 of the BBL season.

Whiteman working well with Bell was looking locked in until a top edge saw him gone for 22 off only 16 balls.

Two huge 6’s from local boy Mitch Marsh, followed by another from Ian Bell, really got things going for Perth – 100 runs up at the half way mark of the 1st innings.

Bell registered 50 off 35 balls on debut, but the Scorchers run was short lived with Marsh getting out caught and bowled by Jordan soon after for a quick fire 31 off 18. Ian Bell would then go on to make 61 of 42, putting the Scorchers in a controlling position.

It what seemed a bit controversial Voges kept being pushed down the lineup with Marsh, Willey and Turner all taking the field ahead of the Captain. No doubt he knew something we didn’t with Turner smashing back to back 6’s in the 15th over after the Bell run out with Adelaide definitely feeling those knocks!

In an uncharacteristic innings Voges was only able to add 2 runs to the Scorchers total.

Adelaide would continue to give away free runs with inaccurate bowling and a brain fade in the field saw a sure run out turned into 2 extra valuable runs for the Scorchers.

Turner would go on to turn in an unbelievable innings 44 off 19, however the highlight of the night would be Turner sending the last ball of the innings way into the crowd for 6, giving the Scorchers 197 to defend, with 18 of those runs gifted as extras from Adelaide bowlers.

No doubt the crowd were excited for Johnson to open the bowling and bring the heat, however Willey got the nod and in return he got Scorchers off to the ideal start removing Dunk for a duck and Weatherald caught in LBW for 1.

The Scorchers bowling attack didn’t stop there with Richardson getting Head to swing wildly resulting in a caught behind, but as to be expected the Adelaide skipper Hodge steadied the ship.

Sensing the momentum may have been shifting, Johnson was brought into attack, with the crowd coming to their feet, his first ball showed signs off rust – as Hodge easily sent it to the ropes for 4, however Johnson would strike and send the dangerous Pollard walking in his first over.

Not everything was perfect for the Scorchers though, as they tried their best to give Adelaide a fighting chance when Johnson and Bell collided while trying to catch an easy pop-up near the ropes.

Wickets continued to fall for Adelaide, but this didn’t seem to stop Hodge as he raced to 50 off 28, until the slow pace (not the heat) of Johnson clean bowled Hodge, ending Adelaide’s hopes of mounting any comeback.

The Scorchers were very impressive with their win over Adelaide and have a great combination of attack both with the bat and ball this year, which should see them as serious contenders for the Big Bash Championship this season.

4 Scorchers Talking Points

  • Turner turned in an impressive display of power
  • Bell is still a class act with the bat
  • Willey will be one of the best all-rounders this year in the BBL
  • It’s great to have MJ back – BBL be scared
