Who is the favourite to win the Melbourne Cup?
With 24 horses set to line up on race day – the Melbourne Cup is said to be one of the hardest races to tip – but luckily we have done some research and have compiled our Melbourne Cup favourite as well as our top tips for roughies and the all-important trifecta.
Melbourne Cup Favourite 2019
Mer De Glace
Mer De Glace came out of the blocks as the initial Melbourne Cup favourite but has now seen as joint-favourite with Finche at $8.50 (odds as of 5/11).
From our initial review on who will win the Melbourne Cup Me De Glace wasn’t one of our top picks. While Lane is going for the Australian Racing Grand Slam and Mer De Glace is going for 7 wins in a row, these milestones could be driving Mer De Glace’s odds more so than projected performance in the long distance Melbourne Cup.
Our favourite for the Melbourne Cup is Finche.
Finche’s odds have firmed from an initial $10 to now $8.50 joint favourite.
Finche is a good stayer who will see out the distance.
Managed 5th at Caulfield Cup 2 weeks ago but was coming from a very wide barrier, drawn 4 increasing the chances of a more favourable run.
Good jockey in McEvoy who has one 3 Melbourne Cups so knows how to get the job done.

Recently beaten lower odds Cross Counter over 2,800 and has run longer distance than the Melbourne Cup so will definitely be hanging on at the end.

Unlike a lot of the international horses, this horse has won at this distance before and also has the very good Aussie Jockey Hugh Bowman on the saddle.
