What a delight, an absolute treat. It’s not every day you get to sit down with four icons and reminisce. Tea With The Dames provides an intimate look at what it takes to be movie royalty, and given recent events in Hollywood it’s fascinating. An absolute treasure, well how could it not be given it’s subject matter, but it’s the informal interview style and clear friendships on display that makes it all the more heartwarming.

Team With The Dames invites us to sit down with living legends, British actresses Joan Plowright, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Eileen Atkins. All have received Damehoods in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the acting profession.

Instead of interviewing them individually the Dames sit around a tables in someones sunroom. The informality not doubt extracting far more candid comments than a formal setting.

It was fascinating to hear them talk about rejection, fear and the courage required to get on set, every day, on every movie.

“Fear is the petrol.”

Even more so, given current times, their insights into how they handled certain directors and reviews. When asked about ageing one of the Dames gives the most perfect, priceless answer, I won’t spoil the surprise. And then there’s their advice to their younger selves, thankfully not your usual run of the mill comments. You could hear a pin drop as the audience sat spellbound throughout the whole movie.

The interview is interspersed with snippets of their pasts in theatre, movies, and television dating back to the 1950s. It also peeks into their lives as mothers, wives and social activists.

It’s was a delight to watch how spectacularly comfortable they are in their own skin, and see the mischievous joy in their eyes.

Tea With The Dames is a beguiling, fascinating, heartwarming peak inside the work and family lives of four cherished Dames.

We were lucky enough to watch while nibbling on scones with jam and cream provided by Transmission. You can have a similar experience at 10.30am at the Windsor on June 6th for the special morning tea event provided by Martineaus,

As I finished my scone and the credits rolled I thought how wonderful to reach their age and be fortunate enough to have forged such great friendships with contemporaries you have competed with in the past. What will we reflect on in our increasingly sanitized lives? I can only hope to have the courage they have to live as long full, meaningful and adventurous lives. This is one you can watch again and again. I can only wish that there might be a part two.
