Perhaps like me you’ve been a Leunig fan for years. Perhaps you have a cartoon of his on your fridge, like I do. If so The Fragments of Leunig is an intriguing documentary for you.

Thanks Fragments of Leunig

Many years ago I was fortunate to attend a full day workshop run by Michael Leunig. What a fascinating day it was. Not only did we learn some great techniques we also caught a glimpse inside the world of the artist.

Early on in The Leunig Fragments the muse verbalises his hope that the movie meanders along, rather than entertain in a linear direction. Well, he absolutely got his wish. Although frustrating to watch at times, the approach gives further insight into the man and allows for a meditative experience.

Thanks Fragments of Leunig

Included amongst this is the film makers frustration at wrangling an artist soul over the five years it took to make the movie.

The Leunig Fragments explores the artists early family life, school life, past working life (at a slaughter house), his relationship with his own family, the origins of the well-known duck and so much more. It also highlights what happens and what it takes to become a national treasure.
