Day three of lockdown I watched The Toll, a fun dark comedy thriller set in Wales. The movie was just what I needed and am sure it will be for you too. Definitely one to watch out for.
Set in the lush countryside of Pembrokeshire, Brendan (Michael Smiley) is seeing out his retirement years as a lone toll-booth operator. Not much happens in the small town and if it does the young local cop Catrin (Annes Elwy) can guess the culprits.
After 29 years of working the toll-booth one day a familiar face drives up to the window. The encounter nearly goes unnoticed until they see each other. A blast from his previous life of crime. Brendan must decide a plan of action while waiting for the crime boss to arrive.
As the time counts down a series of madcap events lead to a showdown of epic proportions. The comment about “nothing happening really” is soon turned on its head.
The Toll is a hoot echoing the likes of Fargo and Cohen Brothers that highlights the beauty of an unremarkable life, or does it?. The movie includes several well-known faces, I particularly like watching Paul Kaye play a madcap character. The body count is high so if don’t like that sort of thing this is not for you. The movie is a perfect break from all the gloom.
