Health Minister Roger Cook has addressed the media with a Western Australia coronavirus update.

In the latest coronavirus update in Perth – overnight 14 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in WA. 5 of these are from the Artantia cruise ship – making it 9 confirmed local cases.

Of the 9 local cases 7 are from within the Perth metro area and 1 on the Kimberley and 1 in Pilbara.

Further details of the confirmed coronavirus cases:

  • Individuals are aged 26 and 84 years of age.
  • Outside of the Artania 4 are related to other cruise ships
  • 4 cases to overseas travel
  • 1 is still under investigation
  • 3 are currently in hospital

The additional 14 confirmed cases now take WA’s total to 436.

Currently of the 436 confirmed cases – 58 individuals are in hospitals and 18 in ICU.

Currently, 16,815 have tested negative and of the confirmed 436 cases 92 have now recovered.

Community testing

Mr Cook isn’t expecting to see a significant increase in confirmed cases as Perth’s wider community testing continues with individuals in WA showing signs of a fever (38C or above) and acute respiratory infection (shortness of breath, cough, sore throat) encouraged to be tested for COVID-19.

Yesterday saw 714 individuals presented, with 455 swabbed for testing at the COVID-19 clinics.

Today’s results reflect the expansion of the testing criteria on Thursday. Mr Cook said the low number is pleasing, as it indicates community spread is not a major issue.
