Premier Mark McGowan and Health Minister Roger Cook provide an update on COVID-19.

The latest Perth coronavirus update saw a relaxed Mark McGowan address the media in Rockingham, confirming WA had again achieved zero confirmed cases of COVID-19 overnight.

While another zero recorded is seen as another significant step towards WA obtaining further normality, Mr McGowan announced there would be an arrival of 4f overseas flights into WA this week – which could result in WA seeing an increase in confirmed cases.

These individuals of course will be asked to quarantine to ensure there isn’t a second wave of coronavirus pandemic within WA.

Further adding to the great work the WA community has been doing by adhering to strict social distancing policies there are now just 55 active cases in the state. 23 of these active cases though originated from the cruise ship Artania – leaving WA with only 30 local active cases.

Of those 55 active cases, 4 individuals remain in intensive care.

Approximately 35,000 people in WA have tested negative to the coronavirus.

While results continue to be very encouraging both Roger Cook and Mark McGowan urged the community to continue practicing good social distancing and personal hygiene.

Influenza campaign

Western Australians have been called on to book a flu vaccination over the coming weeks to protect themselves and others from becoming unwell through the launch of a new public awareness campaign.

It is more important than ever to be vaccinated this year – especially if the influenza season overlaps with COVID-19 cases.

The McGowan Government is also the first State to provide free influenza vaccinations to primary school children who had the highest rate of influenza infection last year.

Funding of $400,000 has been set aside for the primary school aged children vaccination program.

While there has been an 80 percent increase in early influenza vaccination uptake this year, those people who have not received a ‘flu jab’ are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.

Last year WA experienced an unprecedented influenza season, which started earlier than previous years, resulting in a significant increase in notifications, hospitalisations and deaths.

2019 WA influenza statistics:

• 22,000 confirmed cases – 3,343 were children aged between 5-9 years
• 3,224 hospital admissions
• 80 deaths – five of which were children aged 10 and under.
