Knock their socks off with a thoughtful and well planned night out.

Planning the perfect date night is an art. Sometimes romance just isn’t in your wheelhouse. But, there’s no need to worry. We’ve taken some inspiration from the blockbuster Broadway hit and one of the greatest love stories of all time, An American in Paris, which arrives in Perth this July.

Set in post-war Paris, the show follows the story of an American veteran and aspiring painter, Jerry, as he falls in love with the ballet dancer and girl of his dreams, Lise. But, Lise is engaged to a young wealthy businessman. It’s the classic love triangle – does Lise marry her fiancè, or is this perfect stranger the man she’s supposed to be with?

Feel like you’re ready to be the star of your own love story? These are our tips to help you arrange the most romantic date night.

Dress up to the nines

Jeans and a t-shirt have no place in the true romantic’s date night vocabulary, nor wardrobe. It’s all about putting your best foot forward, and that foot definitely won’t be donning a double-plugger.

Why not use the impeccable costuming An American in Paris as an outfit thought-starter? You don’t have to go all-out 40’s; just take some cues from the men’s clean-cut suits and women’s beautiful tea dresses. At the very least, it might inspire you to trade your hoodie for a nice button-up and kick the sneakers for a pretty strappy sandal.

Feel the love surrounded by nature

It’s no surprise that Jerry and Lise fell in love by Paris’ beautiful River Seine. Studies have shown that being in and around nature lights up the parts of the brain associated with empathy and love, helping you connect with other people. So, if you’re really looking to get those sparks flying, take part or all of your date outdoors.

There are plenty of great outdoorsy things you can do as a pair. Pack up a picnic basket for a relaxed afternoon of grazing or do as Jerry and Lise did, and take a sunset stroll by the river.

Lean into high-brow entertainment

Giant buckets of popcorn and Maltesers at the movies make for a cracking date night. But, it doesn’t have quite the same magic as enjoying a more refined level of entertainment with your loved one. Don’t stress about going too fancy; leaning into high-brow entertainment could just mean going to see a foreign drama together or spending an afternoon perusing the works at the art gallery.

Seeing a live ballet performance or theatre production is another level of refinement yet again. Bonus points to you if you can manage to get to a show that has a little from column A (live theatre) and a little from column B (ballet). An American in Paris, perhaps?

Manifest the city of love

If French films and theatre have taught us anything, it’s that nobody does romance quite like the French. Can’t make it to the city of love? Dial-up date night by seeking out the best French-inspired experiences right here in Perth.

Channel the elegance and class of the French with a fruity and floral Fleur De L’Elysee cocktail (or classic French Martini) at Crown Tower’s TWR bar. It takes you back to the romance of a bygone era with its arched back bar, rich jewel tones, and opulent gold features.

Alternatively, whisk your loved one away to the luxurious, velvet-covered La Vie Champagne Lounge for a decadent High Cheese experience. Forget cucumber sandwiches and scones; this tiered tray comes with a baked wheel of camembert and melted raclette, plus a selection of cheeses paired with a honey nut medley, passionfruit crème brûlée and more. Of course, a celebratory glass of Champagne is very on-brand.

Make a night of it

If you’re on a mission to woo, you may as well go the whole nine yards and make a night of it.

While you’re seeking the best French experiences in Perth, head to Bistro Guillaume. It’s the perfect precursor to a night out at Crown Theatre, watching Cameron Holmes and Dimity Azoury dazzle as Jerry and Lise on stage. Start light with a dozen oysters and chicken liver parfait. Still want more? The steak frites and a confit duck leg are très magnifique.

Post-show, retire to a room upstairs at Crown Promenade, Metropol, or Towers, where cuddly robes and slippers await. It’s a fitting finale to a love-filled evening.

Direct from Sydney, An American In Paris is playing at Crown Theatre for three weeks only from 9th July.

Tickets are on sale now – book here to secure your seats.
