February is coming to a close, which means our ‘official’ summer is too. Enjoy the last of the warm weather outside at Sculpture by the Sea or celebrate the Labour Day long weekend at the Hyde Park Festival. Here’s what’s on in Perth this week:
Monday, February 27th
Joondalup Ladies Classic
Ladies, get your golfing swing ready for the Joondalup Ladies Classic at Joondalup Resort. The two-day event is open to golfers of all levels, with separate competitions for handicaps of less than 16.2 and more than 16.3. Both the public and Joondalup Country Club members are welcome to sign up at the cost of $195.00 and $155.00 per person, respectively. Included are two rounds of golf, a motorised cart, a registration gift bag, a light lunch on both days, discounted accommodation, and a paella dinner.
Wednesday, March 1st
Twilight Sailing
Bring your family, friends, and crew to sail around Fremantle Harbour at twilight. There will be prizes, music, and special offers happening back on shore at the Fremantle Sailing Club, and a grand prize for the boat that participates the most in the season. Join the other sailors in the Club Bar after the sail for some live music and a $15.00 food special.
Thursday, March 2nd
Anh Do – The Happiest Refugee Live
Combining stand-up comedy with real-life stories, photos, and videos, hear Anh Do as he retells his story from his book, The Happiest Refugee, to a live audience. You can’t help but empathise with Do’s tale of how his family came close to losing their lives as they escaped a war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat in search of a better life.
Dune Distilling Gin Masterclass
Join Dune Distilling Co for a one-off event of gin education and tastings at Fremantle’s Mrs Brown. Before the main event kicks off, enjoy a welcome gin and tonic and cheese board. Then, it’s straight into learning about the local botanicals that feature heavily in Dune’s gins, from the bright pink Davidson plum to saltbush and lemon myrtle.
Friday, March 3rd
Sculpture by the sea
Prepare for a day of sand, sun, sea, and sculptures when one of the world’s largest free outdoor sculpture exhibitions — Sculpture by the Sea — hits the shores of Cottesloe Beach.
Japanese artist Takeshi Tanabe’s light artwork ‘Between Sky and Earth (Exchanging Messages)’ will be among more than 70 artworks on display from local, interstate, and international artists. Stroll through them in the late afternoon, before sitting down to a picnic or fish and chips as the sun sets below the horizon.
Sculpture by the Sea runs from March 3rd to 20th.
Saturday, March 4th
Florence + The Machine
Get ready to ‘Shake It Out’ when Florence + The Machine head to Australia for their global Dance Fever Tour. Expect those soaring vocals you know and love, spellbinding choreography, and aural captivation.
American singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist King Princess will support Florence + The Machine across all Australian and New Zealand shows. Following the Perth concert, the band will head to Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, before travelling to New Zealand.
Sunday, March 5th
Hyde Park Festival
Spend the Labour Day long weekend in Hyde Park as the Hyde Park Festival celebrates its 35th year. With a fashion show, yoga, dances, dogs, and live music and entertainment, there’s no shortage of events for a wide audience.
Browse over 200 market stalls and food vendors, and choose from various cuisines whilst perusing the wares. Keep the kids entertained with a range of activities and show bags.
Festivities kick off at 10:00 am on both days.
Songs For Freedom
Discover the songs of an ancient country and an ageless culture while celebrating the land, freedom, and peace through music. Written by the Leramugadu (Roeburne) community on Ngarluma country, Songs For Freedom offers heartfelt messages and stories of freedom and hope from Pilbara residents.
Set under the stars at Dyoondalup Point Walter, Songs For Freedom will accompany Punkaliyarra: Sister in Law Dreaming Story.
Food trucks and cultural activities — storytime, weaving, and sand art — will begin at 5:00 pm, with performances kicking off at 7:00 pm.
