Perth World’s 7th Most Liveable City, says Economist Survey

Perth is on it’s way to becoming the most liveable city in the world, moving up in the EIU yearly rankings again.

Perth will need to find a way to improve marginally on “culture” and “crime” in order to win top spot off Melbourne.

The Economist Intelligence Unit‘s yearly report of the worlds most and least liveable cities ranks Perth just behind Adelaide. The City of Churches tied with Calgary in Canada for 6th spot. Melbourne retains 1st spot for the sixth straight year in a row.

Simon Baptist from the EIU told So Perth that our city scores top marks for most categories measured, however, we could improve on crime and culture.

“(Perth) already scored top on most things, but could possibly do better on crime and culture,” Baptist told us.

While Melbourne might claim to be the sports capital of Australia, we can claim the best city in the world for sports culture.

“Perth got the top rating for sports,” Baptist said.

As you can see in the table below, Perth scored 100 for Infrastructure and Healthcare. 88.7 for “Culture and Environment” and 95 for “Stability” – linked to crime and civil unrest.

Perth moved up a spot from 2015, when we scored 8th spot on the list. In 2014 and 2013, Perth was ranked at 9th.

With Perth’s inner city culture blossoming, loads of cultural festivals on the calendar; the new Perth Stadium and much more going on, surely Perth can only improve in the coming years.

About the survey:

Every city is assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure.

Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable. For qualitative indicators, a rating is awarded based on the judgment of in-house analysts and in-city contributors.

For quantitative indicators, a rating is calculated based on the relative performance of a number of external data points. The scores are then compiled and weighted to provide a score of 1–100, where 1 is considered intolerable and 100 is considered ideal.

The liveability rating is provided both as an overall score and as a score for each category. To provide points of reference, the score is also given for each category relative to New York and an overall position in the ranking of 140 cities is provided.
