No more footy in Victoria for 2020?

It’s no secret that we here on the west, well anywhere outside of Victoria feel the AFL can be quite VFL focused, but now there is a very strong possibility that there will be no further AFL games in Victoria for the 2020 season.

Reported on AFL.com.au, Damian Barrett announced that the AFL has all but conceded there will be no further home and away matches played in Victoria in 2020.

Queensland will now become the main AFL hub for the remainder of the season with mini-hubs in Sydney (for the moment) and Perth. 10 Victorian clubs would be based in Queensland for the remainder of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

Making their way to Perth after round 8 will be Hawthorn and Carlton – with exact fixture details not yet known.

Barrett also reported that the fixturing of matches beyond round 8 will incorporate matches on all days of the week. This obviously makes sense if there are only a select few stadiums in which games can be played each week. Also, this is great news for footy fans being able to watch a game every day. No doubt though this will become a logistical fixturing and player management nightmare for the AFL and the clubs.

The proposed date of the Grand Final remains October 24, and with Queensland the main AFL Hub – one would have to think that they are now in the box seat to hold the 2020 AFL Grand Final over Victoria and Western Australia.

But like everything else this year, nothing is certain.
