Mandurah will soon be home to an exciting art installation set to attract more visitors to the Peel region.
The Mandurah and Peel area has plenty of drawcards for visitors eager to experience coastal lifestyle on the foreshore, a meeting with dolphins, or a relaxing holiday atmosphere – and it’s about to get a little upgrade.
A series of enormous wooden sculptures are set to be installed through Mandurah in late 2022. They’ve all been designed by renowned Danish artist Thomas Dambo, whose work has featured across the world and drawn the keen art lover’s eye with his use of recycled materials.
The WA-themed sculptures will feature at least five site-specific works, each up to five metres tall and placed in secret locations waiting to be discovered and explored. The local community will also be directly involved in the creation of the sculptures, giving each its own personality as they tell the story of the Mandurah area.
Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday has praised the move to collaborate with community members.
“I love the fact that the sculptures are going to be made in collaboration with local people. It is a great project for the community. They also carry a special environmental message that I think resonates particularly well at the moment, and that is very special too.”
The art installation has been supported by the State Government through Tourism WA in a bid to help attract more visitors to the Peel region and boost the local economy, with predictions that it will inject millions into the local economy over the first twelve months.
Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman expects it to capture thousands of visitors and benefit the area greatly.
“This will bring thousands of visitors, experiencing our beautiful environment and spending money in local businesses.”
The works are expected to be installed later this year, so watch this space.
