WA Electric Vehicle Charging network

First EV Fast Charger Launches In The Kimberley

WA continues to get greener with the extension of the WA EV Network.

As the electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to gain momentum, the WA EV Network is taking another step forward with the launch of the first EV fast charger in the Kimberley region. This move is part of the network’s ongoing expansion across regional Western Australia, making it easier for EV owners to travel throughout the state.

The fast charger, located at the Town Beach carpark in Broome, is the first of eight planned for the Kimberley region. Developed by Horizon Power, this 150-kilowatt fast charger allows EV drivers to recharge their vehicles in as little as 20 minutes, providing increased convenience and accessibility for those embarking on long journeys.

Horizon Power is leading the charge in facilitating EV adoption across regional WA. Following the successful deployment in Broome, the next EV charging station is set to open in Carnarvon next month. Meanwhile, construction has already commenced on charging stations in Exmouth, Denham, Derby, and Karratha, further expanding the EV charging infrastructure network.

One of the key features of Horizon Power’s approach is the integration of solar and battery technology, coupled with a backup diesel generator, to power EV chargers in remote locations across Western Australia. This approach ensures reliable and sustainable charging facilities for EV owners, even in areas where access to traditional power grids may be limited.

The WA EV Network is a significant undertaking by the State Government, backed by an investment of $43.5 million to bolster EV infrastructure throughout WA. Spearheaded by Horizon Power and Synergy, the network aims to establish 98 charging stations across 49 locations, creating a seamless connection between Perth and regional areas.

With the average distance between charging stations approximately 200 kilometres, the WA EV Network is facilitating long-distance travel for EV owners.

Apart from enhancing travel convenience, transitioning to EVs also aligns with the government’s environmental goals. EVs charged using the South West Interconnected System, the state’s main electricity grid, generate 30 per cent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional petrol vehicles, contributing to a cleaner and greener future.

The WA EV Network will soon stretch over 7,000 kilometres, spanning from Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the south and east to Eucla. This extensive network will make it one of the longest in Australia.

The journey towards a greener future has already begun, with the first fast chargers unveiled in Geraldton and Northampton in April 2023.
