Free Winter Activities in Perth – Winter Arts Festival

The weather in Perth may not be as hot as it was a few months ago, but you can be rest assured that the arts scene most definitely is thanks to the beginning of the City of Perth Winter Arts Festival…

‘Winter’ and ‘festival’ are two words that you won’t hear in the same sentence too often. The idea of venturing out of the house in the cold and rain doesn’t gel so well with some, but the City of Perth’s Winter Arts Festival aims brings some life to Perth during the drearier months, and keeps some momentum in the event calendar after an extremely busy summer season.

Trust me when I say that an intimate live music session is a lot more cosy and fun in winter than it is in the midst of a scorching summer!

While I truly value the experience of going to see live music, or watching a gorgeous dance piece, sometimes my budget just doesn’t stretch to cover those additional fun outings each week. I am always the first to get excited about a free gig or art exhibition, because I don’t think that our income should be dictating our ability to soak up cultural events.

So, in light of the upcoming Winter Arts Festival, I have picked out my top 8 free events that will be happening across the course of the festival, some family friendly and others reserved just for the adults…

Winter Supper Club

WintersupperGood, hearty food and cool winter weather go hand in hand. Head down to the undercover area at the Perth Town Hall on the last Friday of June, July and August, to feast on some tasty treats from a host of local food providers. Bring the whole family, fill your bellies, and have a boogie to the live music between 5.00pm and 9.00pm.

LightHouse

LightHouseAll through July, the exterior of Perth’s iconic Council House building will be the canvas of artists Amy Perejuan-Capone, Emma Buswell and Melissa McGrath’s. They will be using the external lights, that we are all so familiar with, to create beautiful new artworks, visible from 6.00pm to 1.00am each night. Pop down to see the display after filling up at the Winter Supper Club for a double Winter Arts Festival whammy!

Ghost of Record Store

Ghost of Record StoresI am a sucker for anything quirky and different, and Chris Cobilis’s installation in Forrest Place sounds like it is not something to be missed! Using real, vintage turntables, cassette decks and CD players, Chris will cleverly replicate a record store of years past. It is only open for a short time though, so mark this one down in the diary – 8th July – 12th of August, Thursday through to Sunday, 12.00pm – 5.00pm.

Winter Artsbar

ArtsBarSee the decommissioned tunnel at the Perth Concert Hall transformed into an light spectacle, listen to some live music and settle in for the night with a delicious glass of wine. Open from 5.00pm every Friday night in July, this pop up bar sounds like it is going to be missed at the end of it’s term!

Reason For Being

There are only a handful of dance works being presented this Winter Arts Festival season, all of them (with the exception of Reason for Being) ticketed. As an ex dancer, this is the event that I am most looking forward to of the free events. From the 6th-9th July, and again from 24th-27th August, Raewyn Hill and the Co3 dance company will be stationed throughout the art gallery, performing contemporary pieces for the public.

St George’s Art

ArtGallerySeeing the work of a famous, well established artist is amazing, but even more amazing is seeing the work of our insanely talented yr 10, 11 and 12 visual artists. Catch their work on display at St George’s cathedral from 16th-24th July.

Wild Life Show

windowsFrom the 28th June to the 20th of July, the Perth Town Hall will play host to a whole lot of native Australian flora and fauna. In memory of the wildlife shows that took place in the 50’s and 60’s, the City of Perth are bringing in petting zoos (and this isn’t your farm animal petting zoo!), native flowers and a group of educators to teach the general public about our native animals and plants up close.
(This is a great event for young and old!)

Windows of The City

From the 15th of August until 16th of September, the windows of local Perth businesses will be home to different installations set up by some of Perth’s best artists. In conjunction with Telstra Perth Fashion Festival, Windows of The City showcases Perth’s great local businesses and some of our home grown artistic talent. Grab a coffee and wander the streets on a window treasure hunt!
