After much anticipation, the long-awaited extension of the Mitchell Freeway to Romeo Road in Alkimos, north of Perth, is finally nearing completion. The $232 million project, jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Western Australian Government, is poised to revolutionise transportation in Perth’s north-west, providing a crucial high-standard north-south link in the region. The official opening of the new section is scheduled for July 10.
Spanning from Hester Avenue in Clarkson to Romeo Road in Alkimos, the Mitchell Freeway Extension will greatly enhance the connectivity and accessibility of the rapidly growing northern corridor of Perth. Commuters and residents can look forward to new freeway access points at Lukin Drive, Butler Boulevard, and Romeo Road, which will significantly improve traffic flow and alleviate congestion in the area.
A key component of this major infrastructure development has been the collaboration with METRONET, resulting in the construction of Romeo Road and the establishment of a new east-west road link connecting Wanneroo Road to Marmion Avenue. Notably, the project includes the construction of a new bridge over rail on Romeo Road, which is a significant milestone achieved in conjunction with the Yanchep Rail Extension works.
The Mitchell Freeway Extension project is just the beginning of an extensive plan to bolster the road, rail, and cycling networks in support of the ongoing expansion and growth of Perth’s northern corridor. Among the upcoming initiatives are the METRONET Yanchep Rail Extension and the implementation of Smart Freeway technology on the southbound section of Mitchell Freeway, stretching from Hester Avenue to Vincent Street. These future enhancements aim to improve travel efficiency, enhance safety, and accommodate the increasing demands of the burgeoning population.
In addition to its practical benefits, the Mitchell Freeway Extension project also incorporates a touch of artistic flair. Two underpasses and two bridge abutments have been adorned with impressive public art, showcasing the creative talents of school children, local Perth artists, and an Aboriginal artist. This integration of art and infrastructure adds vibrancy and cultural significance to the freeway, providing an engaging and visually appealing experience for motorists.
The significant investment of $232 million from both the Australian Government and the Western Australian Government underscores their commitment to improving transport infrastructure and meeting the evolving needs of Perth’s communities. Each government has contributed an equal share of $116 million, highlighting the cooperative effort to deliver this transformative project.
As the Mitchell Freeway Extension prepares to open its doors to the public on July 10, Perth residents eagerly anticipate the positive impact it will have on their daily commutes and overall quality of life. With improved connectivity and additional transportation options, this vital infrastructure development is set to shape the future of Perth’s north-west for generations to come.
