Family-friendly Perth fireworks displays

For families celebrating with younger children, Perth and its surrounds offer several early evening fireworks displays that deliver the New Year’s Eve atmosphere without the late night. These shows are designed to feel just as special as the midnight celebrations, while allowing families to head home well before bedtime and the crowds.

The City of Light fireworks over the Swan River at 8:30 PM remain the most popular family option in Perth. This full-scale display offers the complete New Year’s Eve experience, with strong viewing from Elizabeth Quay, Barrack Square, Supreme Court Gardens, and the South Perth foreshore. It is the closest thing to a “main event” for families who don’t want to wait until midnight.

North of the city, Breakwater Marina in Mindarie hosts an 8:30 PM fireworks display in a more relaxed coastal setting. The marina and surrounding foreshore provide space to spread out, making it a comfortable choice for families with prams or younger children.

Mandurah and Rockingham both offer slightly later family-friendly options with fireworks at 9:00 PM. Mandurah’s display at the Western Foreshore War Memorial in Halls Head and Rockingham’s show at the Rockingham Jetty allow families to enjoy a countdown-style moment without committing to a midnight finish.

For families spending New Year’s Eve off the mainland, Rottnest Island will host an 8:30 PM fireworks display over Thompson Bay. The earlier timing makes it a popular option for those staying overnight or visiting the island for the day, who want to catch the last late-night ferry back to Perth.

Free public transport on New Year’s Eve

The WA Government has announced that public transport in Perth will be free after midnight on New Year’s Day, with free travel on all Transperth trains, buses and ferries from 12:01 AM until around 6:00 AM to help people get home safely after New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Extra services will also run overnight to Fremantle, Scarborough, Rockingham, and other key lines, and no tagging on or off will be required during the free period.

Please note that event details, including start times and durations, are subject to change. For the most current information, refer to the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s schedule of fireworks events.
