Public Transport Is Free Across Perth On Grand Final Day

Taking a bus or train to a Grand Final watch party won't cost you a cent, with the Cook Government making public transport free for the day. Here's what you need to know.

Public transport across Perth will be free this Saturday, with the Cook Government opening up the entire Transperth network for Grand Final day as the Fremantle Dockers take on the Brisbane Lions at the MCG.

“We’re putting the ‘Free’ in ‘Freo’ this Grand Final Weekend,” said Transport and Major Infrastructure Minister Rita Saffioti.

“It’s going to be an incredible day, we know Fremantle will be packed and we want everyone to have fun and stay safe.”

“We will be making all public transport free across the network on Saturday so it’s easier for fans and families to be part of the excitement.”

It’s Freo’s first Grand Final in 13 years, after last Friday’s preliminary final win over the Sydney Swans, and tens of thousands of fans are expected across Fremantle and Perth on the day. The first bounce is at 2:30 pm in Melbourne, which is 12:30 pm here.

For regular commuters, the saving is modest. SmartRider holders already ride free on Sundays, and the Go Anywhere Fare has kept every other trip to $2.80 since January. This Saturday, it’ll mean the most for the people who don’t usually catch the train, and on Grand Final day that’s a lot of people.

Where to watch the game

Free screenings are running across the city, including at Northbridge Piazza, Yagan Square, and the BHP Amphitheatre outside Optus Stadium, where the Stadium Park watch party has food trucks and a bar.

In Fremantle, the Cappuccino Strip will be closed to traffic with big screens showing the game, and plenty of pubs along it are screening it too.

Extra trains will run to get everyone there and home again, with services every 15 minutes on every line until 11:00 pm.

“I encourage everyone to plan ahead and catch public transport this weekend for free,” Saffioti said.

Parking around Fremantle is hard enough on a normal Saturday, so leave the car at home. You can plan your trip on the Transperth Journey Planner or the Transperth app.
